In late 2007, the Trailblazers received a $10K grant from Trans-American Reinsurance (many thanks to club president Jim Grover!) for the purchase of two hand cycles (mountain trikes?) for use by the adaptive sports community...You may recall that we constructed the trail at Jetton as not only a beginner trial on a small piece of CMP&R property, but to also accomodate the trikes for the physically challenged...

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

On Wednesday, I contacted Mike Augspurger, owner of One-Off Titanium ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) and our cycles are due for completion in mid to late February...We'll be receiving the first two out of production (btw - we need to chose two colors)...

On April 5th, CMP&R, the Trailblazers and various adaptive sports programs in the Metro-Charlotte region will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Jetton trail and introduce the public to this new cycle sport...

To see the trikes in action, check out these YouTube videos...

Thanks go out to all that donated their precious time to constructing the trail and those that worked selflessly in an effort to find grant monies for the trikes...

Woohoo!  As far as color, I checked the website and I like the Dragon design.  I don't know if that's an option, but it's cool!

I like the Yo Eddie design with trail tools.

I think these designs are extra.

We need room for the Transamerica logo (our primary sponsor for the trikes) and the Trailblazers too. From what I see in the photos, I'm hoping they can both go on the back of the seat so they are very visable. It seems anything on the frame will need to be smaller.

Hardly a dumb question, Luna...

Two will NOT be chosen...

The cycles will be made available to ANY adaptive sports enthusiast...

As a club and with the Cycle Path's assistance, we will house and maintain the trikes...I understand through the manufacturer that several of the lot of 20 units currently under construction have been purchased through government checks (believed to be for injured returning Iraqi war veterans)...

We simply wish to introduce the trikes to the community...Like any cyclist, we all want a ride to call our own...I would be willing to wager that interested adaptive sports athletes will purchase their own after experiencing the trikes for themselves....

I'm coming in late as usual on this one.......and off topic...again as usual.....Tomasita, when our lives chill a bit we still need to get out and tweak Jetton......and yes, I know I dropped way too much crusher fine/run on the sweet swithback  Grinnear the end where folks have busted their beer bottles for the last twenty years........the layout was just too nice to re-route, and I was thinking we'd have more than 2 inches of rain over the summer to seat that stuff in. I haven't been out there since we road it after we finished, so have no idea how gooshy it is.

I'm having the urge to ride that fine mile and a quarter trail we built......even if it's short, if it's fun it's all good..... Kiss

Reports have it that the 2-in of crusher fine has solidified into a brick and that we (so far) have been successful in suppressing the bottle glass...

I discussed a possible short re-route of the turn-drop w/Big Bike Mike...He has a plan, we just need to execute...I'll check my calendar...

I am under the impression that we will be seeing the trikes in the very near future...I'll contact One-Off and see where we stand...

A quick, after-work ride may be in order!

I have a wetsuit if someone could loan me some paddles.  Let me know when you do the after work ride, I would like to join you.  I've never ridden Jetton.

Edward, I miss you and Robin!!  Tom, I miss you too, but I get to see you at least once a month for meetings Wink

The two hand powered mountain trikes arrived at The Cycle Path yesterday and Mark has already put 'em together and they are ready to go! We have planned an outing at the Jetton Park trail this Saturday, March 22nd starting at 10:00 am where the trikes will be available for use. We have asked several adaptive use organizations in the area to try to get some of their interested members out to the park Saturday to try out the trikes. I sure don't see why anyone who has an interest in giving them a try shouldn't go for it. I know I want to.

These are hand-built, sophisticated machines that are sure to impress. They have dual Phil Woods hubs up front, Avid BB5 mechanical disk brakes all around (3!), incorporate a gearing reduction ratio of 1350 to 1 and a mid-chassis coupling that allows then to be easily broken down into 2 pieces for transportation.

I'd like to ask our members to consider donating some necessary accessories for first time/new riders to use the trikes. We can keep them at the Cycle Path where the bikes will be stored and available for use by physically challenged users. I figure we could use 3 or 4 helmets (Adult SM, Med (2?) and LG) and the same for gloves. We also should have some protective eyewear available. (The Trikes are adjustable to accommodate different sized users, but at this time we are not sure if the trikes will be usable by smaller kids.) If you are interested, please post below and contact Mark Sullivan at the Cycle Path to make arrangements. Also, there is definitely an opportunity here for someone with some creative ideas about how we can make it easier for the physically challenged users to transport the trikes to and from the trailhead- say with a specially designed "trike rack" or by pursuing donations for a trailer, etc. If someone or a group could take on this challenge, it would be really great!

I want to recognize our past president Tom Mathews for his vision and commitment to realizing both the Jetton Trail and the acquisition of the Mountain trikes. In conjunction with Greg Jackson and the Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Department, Tom saw the need for an adaptive use trail and an opportunity for the Trailblazers to make a real difference in our community. We should all be proud, and thankful.

Don't forget, the Grand Opening ceremony for the Jetton Park Trail and the formal introduction of the trikes will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday April 5th. This will be a celebration and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Jim G.

Just as an FYI, the builder tells me that one of his fully assembled hand cycles can be rolled into the back of a hatchback Honda...Now that was prior to the addition of the larger diameter rear tire that these babies have, but transportation may be easier than we think...They part at the main tube into two sections for transportation ease...

But Jim is on the right track here, we do need a few donations to round out our arsenal...I'll start the ball rolling with the donation of a helmet...

All the younger readers here are scratching their heads, asking what the heck he's talking about and wondering of that O'Riley person is a voice in his head, and us, ah, more mature readers are asking why does he have to make us feel so old?

I got a chance to do 1 full lap at Jetton yesterday after work.  That was an eye opening experience!  What an upper body workout that can be.  Anyway...it's been 'dirt' approved.

He tried it in the parking lot earlier in the afternoon but didn't make it out to Jetton.  He said he would more than likely make it out tomorrow.

PS  Call me today, please.  Thanks!
