We had a small group last night (9 attendees) but the small group atmosphere allowed us the opportunity to bounce some ideas around the room and update individuals on where we're going as a club, and what is happening with IMBA sanctioned events in our area...
Thanks to all that attended, most of all to Jim Grover who made the long trip up north to speak with the group...Under Jim's leadership, the club (organization) is going to continue to grow and prosper...
We'll continue to nurture the LN Chapter...Any takers on similar groups in other areas?
I was really impressed by the breadth of opportunities that were discussed at the North meeting. While we struggle a bit these days to see opportunities close to the metro center for meaningful sized pieces of land that could support trails with longevity, the outer reaches of our club's "region" is where the big opportunities lie. I am beginning to think that like the old saw about politics, trails are LOCAL. It generally takes folks that are close to the property to get involved to the level that creates new trail (Vinnie Cactus and other historical precedents notwithstanding!).
As a single club, we comprise a geographically diverse region of "local" trails. From Statesville to Ann Springs we're talking 1 1/2 hours away easy, and that's all interstate.
I'm a believer that getting folks to meetings gets them involved in the club. (It's not the only way, but it works.) If we can make it easier for folks to get to regional meetings, where their local trail issues and opportunities are a priority, that just makes sense.
I think its time to gauge the response to an East side chapter. We've noticed a lot of trail building activity and new memberships specifically located around the opening of Sherman Branch. (I also think an established East Chapter could lead the way for the rest of us toward the IMBA Uwharrie Trail Center ... but that's getting ahead of myself.)
There's no reason a West Chapter couldn't take hold as well. That was discussed on these forums not too long ago, but didn't draw too much direct response to the post asking who would attend. We definately need a better way to gague interest in attending chapter meetings than just a post or two here. (Also, there's lots of opportunity for western locals to work with the PASA guys at Poston and other western opportunities they have.)
Like any initiative, we need NEW guys/gals to step up to be willing to take a leadership role. We've got
lots of support and experience available .... just need folks with a desire to make something happen.
