January 1st Ride at Lake Norman
12/18/08 at 11:16pm
Print Post
Because our normal first Thursday of the month meeting date falls on New Years day, WE WILL NOT HAVE A MEETING AT FUEL PIZZA on January 1.

WE WILL HOWEVER have a club ride at Lake Norman State Park on January 1st @ 1:00 instead! This will be the first day that the trail direction is reversed for the new year and a good opportunity to have a club gathering OTHER than a normal monthly meeting.

Don't go too overboard on New Year's eve and look forward to seeing a large group on the 1st.

Further details to follow.

Cool Breeze Cyclery & Trek Bicycle Store Charlotte will be sponsoring a raffle and cookout after the ride.

Bring a snack/appitizer if you are in the cooking mood and ride off the booze from the night before!

Sorry for the delay on the start time. Lots going on with the holidays.

New Years Day Ride at Lake Norman State Park will start at 1pm, food starting around 3pm.

We'd also like to have a kids ride, so please think about bringing out the kids and all those shiny new bikes they got for Christmas. Love to see the kids group as big as the adults.

We'll keep watch on the weather and post updates/adjustments as needed.

Now, to help our sponsor, Cool Breeze Cyclery & Trek Bicycle Store Charlotte plan for how much food to bring, could I get some posts on who's interested and how many in your party? We''ll plan for a certain amount, but the more info we have the better.

PLAN B IF THE TRAILS ARE CLOSED

As long as it's not physically raining we can have a road ride that leaves from the park at the same time. It will be a "show and go" ride, no drop policy...meaning whoever shows up we'll plan accordingly as to speed, sweepers, and we won't leave anyone behind. Anyone that wants to hammer it and knows the way is welcome to have at it, but this will be social ride where all skill/fitness levels are welcome. There's a good 25ish mile loop that may be a good option.

And yes, a mountain bike club can have road rides too. I've even ridden the road bike with the hucksters before...Imagine that Grin....I've ridden beside Vinny at the Booty where the big hit guy was cranking triple digit mileage on...yes, a road bike. If you're not doing anything Vinny, bring the family/crew and come join us.

I repeat, this event/ride whether it's in the woods or the road is open to members and non members. Whether you're more of roadie, mountain biker, or big hit huckster, in the end we all like to ride....So come join us

Count me in with two more (the family.)   Smiley

I'm not sure if I'll be able to ride though, since I decided to dislocate my shoulder on Sunday.   Sad  Maybe the pain will subside by then, or else I can just watch my son and my wife ride the trails.

I'm in for the Thursday ride too. Not sure yet about family members joining, but doubt it.

Who else is coming??? Post up so we can get a reasonable head count!!

How about Leah and Neal, the originator of the idea??? Tom, you gonna be back in town??

What about all the North-siders?

0% chance of rain between now and New Years Day. Some good wind in the forecast for tomorrow to help dry things off, just cross your fingers about keeping the temp above freezing so we don't have that thaw and freeze stuff going on. It's probably going to dip below freezing, but we can hope.

We'll be trying to make some estimates today on how much food to purchase, but please feel free to bring a dish (Mrs. Mowery, you know the best way to make sure we remember the cookies is to bake some of your best and bring to share.. Wink), snacks, etc.

Ordered up some subs for the event.  Look for a kids ride that starts at the same time, and a raffle from Cool Breeze Cyclery & Trek Bikes Charlotte during the chow time.

Well, count us out.  My son broke his arm this afternoon, so now he has a nice new cast.  Sad  No bike riding for a while.   Cry  It's okay though, at least now my shoulder will have time to heal properly.  I guess the injury bug hit us pretty hard.  Y'all have fun out there, and Happy New Year!

Real sorry to hear it Mutt. Hope he's feelin' OK. I'm sure you won't keep him off the bike too long. He's a trooper. Tell 'em Mr. Pres sez we'll miss him at tomorrow's ride.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.  Isaiah really appreciates your comments.   Smiley

He'll be back on the bike in no time.  He fell while he was at the playground, and broke both the radius and the ulna (the two forearm bones in case you didn't know), just before his wrist.  Neither one broke all the way through, so they say he should be fine in about four weeks.   So the moral of this story is, playgrounds are more dangerous than mountain bikes!  Cool

Thanks to everyone for such a great ride and attendance.    I'm also very thankful to all the encouraging words as you all passed my family on the main loop as our two sons enjoyed their first off road experience.

(They kicked butt and asked to go back out a 2nd and 3rd time.)

We took some photos, not enough but some!!  Here's my set over at flickr.

Quite a turn out for sure.....and I second the thanks to  Arleigh and Cool Breeze/Trek store crew and everyone else that pitched in for the treats at the end of the ride.

And did everyone see the new nice almost can't miss them signs showing foot and bike traffic directions?  Should put an end (almost) to the wrong way charlies.  Grin

And man had I forgotten what that hill on the Mombo was like on a single speed ( no I did not clear it this time) going that direction... Cry

Good to meet some new riders too.

yes big thanks to cool breeze and the gang!!!  and arleigh (im assuming your the one that moved here a few weeks ago i spoke w/ [i was the one wearin the socks, brought the marinated carruts/pound cake]) glad to hear they enjoyed and hopefully everything is working out here in nc for you, thanks for your efforts as well.

i dont know, laminated fluorescent paper works fine for trail signs, until you put them outside, on a trail, near a lake.  it definitely looks more like a state park trail now than ever b4

THANKS AGAIN GUYS AND GIRL!!!! Wink

Great day all around. 80+ riders, good weather, good ride, and good food. Thanks again to Arleigh, and all the folks from Cool Breeze Cyclery & Trek Bicycle Store Charlotte for partnering wih the Tarheel Trailblazers to sponsor the ride. Great job folks!!

Also thanks to Casey and the Park staff for letting us set up a tent and host a big ride like this.

We'll be having a big work day this month to continue to add mileage to this great trail system, so keep your eye on the trailwork section of the forum for updates.

And a very special thank you from my wife to Gramps for putting a lock on the porta jon.. Grin One from me to since now I can get ready faster since I don't have to stand guard.  Kiss

I'll add my thanks to Arleigh and the Trek/Cool Breeze stores for an awsome ouying. We had anywhere from 60 to 80 folks show up. Everyone enjoyed the ride ('cept maybe Brian who did a few too many shoulder plants due to a loose SS chain) and the food and desserts were great. Great way to start the new year. Thanks to everyone for coming out.

Just as importantly, there were lots of faces that we don't ordinarily see at a regular monthly meeting. That confirms that we need to do more of this type of gathering where we can get more/different members attending and participating. If anyone has ideas for future gatherings and alternatives to monthly meetings, just let us know. Any bike shops or other sponsors that want to get involved, please give us a holler.

Arleigh also left us some New Year's presents to use for our next meeting. She had intended to raffle off some scwhag at the ride, but for several reasons we didn't pull it off. I'll post up separately how we'll dispose of the new loot, so stay tuned.

Thanks Arleigh!!! That was fun!

Sounds like I missed a good time!!  But it was hard to beat low to mid-70's in Florida.  Wink  Although I did miss the elevation.  Dang, Florida is flat!! Shocked

Just a few suggestions from a new guy:

-If you see new faces introduce yourselfs and strike up a conversation
-Clicks tend to intimidate new people
-Have some get to know you activities
-maybe some nametags that have your forum name and real name so people can identify who you are; thus maybe help eliminating suggestion # 1
-bike contest (nicest, oldest, most expensive, best looking etc)
-introduce who the trail maintenance people are

These all may sound pretty lame but something different and new if they haven't already been done.

Aw, thanks for the condolences, Mark.  I was still holding out hope with 3 min. to go...  Driving for a TD and only 2 needed. Hey, it coulda happened.  (Woulda been a small miracle, but...)  And then the interception.   Cry

Anyway, good suggestions ReignMan.  At the Diva rides we always start with introductions and I was just commenting to Ed that we should do that, but looked up & the lot was already cleared out.  I think it was too cold for hanging around and people wanted to get the blood flowing.  Maybe next time...

Thanks for the constructive feedback ReignMan. All good points, and we really are interested in hearing this kind of feedback.

In years past the THTB's have purposely steered away from being a very social organization, and put all our focus on building and maintaining trails. Around that time 4-5 years ago, we were in danger of losing significant amounts of our existing trails, so we put all our resources into the trails themselves. I believe this has worked out very well from the "trails" standpoint, since we've got more to ride than ever before, but we've learned you can't let the social aspect slide to continue to grow as a club.

The guys are a little too used to the "show and go" style of getting together (myself included), and that's just not the best process for the social piece of meeting new folks.

We plan on doing many more of these social rides at various trails this year, and I would ask a little grace as we take constructive feedback to heart and try and improve....i.e., don't give up on us, and please keep coming out. At the very least we need to have a Tarheel Trailblazer pop-up tent staffed with members at the beginning of the ride to have a focal point for folks to see what's going on and meet and greet.

ReignMan, I don't know if we've met before, but if you can make it to our next monthly meeting between now and the next social event/ride, I'm the MC of the meetings now, and would love to meet you. I'll be the introvert at heart with the big mouth.. Smiley

Ride on...

Those are great suggestions!  I hope we hear more for the next event.  Does anyone have any ideas for the next organized TTB ride/event?

When we did the TTB North meeting at LANO I thought it would be really nice to have the "North" meetings, during the "good sun" months in the north area trails.

Signal Hill
LANO
Fisher Farm
North Mech
others are fine as well, it would give most of us a reason to ride trails we may not get to a bunch of the time and see how others do things we may have not for trails we work on all the time, I know since the ride at Fisher Farm with Mark Sean and I have wanted to steal some of his ideas used there. (wow thats a ramble if i ever have rambled before)

It was neat at the meeting above that we would ride a loop and then stop to talk "business" then ride another loop etc.. IMO that is much better than eating at shomars
