IMBA/TFK/REI Kids Ride 10/3

Print Post
Good news!  We've reached out to REI and found them very excited about having the Tarheel Trailblazers partner with them for a kids ride on Saturday 10/3 at Beatty.

REI Pineville and Trips for Kids Charlotte were already leveraging the TFK ride at Beatty that day and tying it into the IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day to make an event of it.  Aubin at REI Northlake also wanted to do an event with us so now they're on board as well.  I'll be working with the groups over the next few weeks to learn how we can best support them.

These kid's events are a lot of fun and there are lots of little ways to help out...even just joining a ride with some kids and offering encouragement.

Mark your calendars now and plan on coming out.

Mike My Son Kyle still talks about the ride that you led him on at last years event. He is also very interested in helping out the Trip for kids ride that day. We are all looking forward to it. See you there!

That's great!

There's been lots and lots of work (well, e-mails, which are what we call work in the 21st century) on the kids' ride this week.   I should have some updates to post soon.

I'll be back in Charlotte 9/14. Putting the Kid's ride on my schedule if work doesn't get in the way. It will be good to get back into the swing of things there.

I'd like to help out,  and thanks for the personal invitations Mike and Rick.

I always have a good time at these kids events because I can smoke most of the kids on the trail,  when your as slow and have as huge an Ego as I do,  being faster than anyone is a good thing.

Riding with the kids and leaving them in my dust,  is a step above riding around the retirement comminuties looking for a race with the old ladies with their walkers too,  that just gets old fast.
Wink

I have a small suggestiong on the food.  Burgers and dogs are so unhealthy and boring to grill.  Boneless and skinless chicken thighs are more fun to grill,  better tasting and more healthy for the kiddies.
I think Chicken is actually cheaper than dogs and burgers if you consider the cost of the buns and condiments in the over all picture.

Bone in chicken is even more affordable if cost is a big issue,  drumsticks or wings are always a good choice too.

Just a thought,  I'll flip whatever is in front of me on the grill with equal love,  I'm an equal opportunity griller.

With the weather cooled down in October, I should be back to riding regularly by the time this comes on the calender too.

Thanks for stepping up Benson.

Just be careful about planning to smoke those kids riding - some of the Trips For Kids riders are quite competitive!   :o (But I bet they can't do extended wheelies.)

Here's what we have so far for the Kids' event:

Saturday 10/3/2009, 9AM--12PM at Beatty
--Rides from the tennis courts and Pavillion 1 by the lake is reserved for lunch
--TFK has registered the event with IMBA
--REI to provide cookout lunch and supplies
--Likely to have 30+ kids from TFK alone (typical weekly rides are 20-25)
--TFK will bring their REI bikes to the event for their kids
(these are usually kept at Fisher--they have trailers of bikes at both Beatty and Fisher)
--Various rides will use green, blue, and black trails depending on group skill level (typical for TFK)
--Trailblazers will join kids rides to give tips/pointers/encouragement

Also:
--Chris (TheMutt) is reaching out to PASA for opportunities around them doing a skills clinic
(if not, we'll just do skills on the trail like we normally do)
--TFK is reaching out to Divas for their participation
--TFK is sending out a notice to their 500-person mailing list, Gramps has been spreading the word among shop patrons (and shops?), and we'll want to spread the word via the club meeting, this forum, and our own e-mail list.

Last year, on our own, we drew 15 kids.  This year, TFK expects at least 30 kids and if we and REI each draw another 10-15 kids, we're going to have a pretty sizeable event.

Please plan on coming out and spending the morning with us to help on rides and cook the food.   If there's anything this group is good at, it's riding Beatty and grilling, so I expect some strong participation from you all.  I mean, how much better of a volunteer opportunity do you want?  No Pulaskis, McLoeds, or saws.  Just come join the kids on the rides and offer some tips and support.  And if the blue and black trails challenge you like they do me, then you can help me at the grill.

Depends on your kid's tollerance level,  and your skills at slipping through trees.

If you didn't want to go into the tighter stuff,  and stayed on the green trails you'd probably be fine. Smiley

I used to block off a go around at the twin trees on the green loop ( the two trees that are about 30 inches wide ) but after seeing a buggy I decided that I would leave it open so there was a path large enough for the little ones.

As far as the rest of the trail....look out for the Yellow jackets if you move the blocking debris.... and no I am not joking.

Beatty does have lots of roots and bumps,  it's definately no Greenway or bike path.

There is a lot of really smooth pavement there though too,  nobody will mind if you don't take the trailer on much trail if it's too bumpy for her and just primarily enjoy the Grillin and Chillin and meetin and greetin.
Whatever works for you and her will be the order of the day!!!!
