"Stone, Starr Hill, Rogue, Dogfish, Oberon, Bells, and Terrapin should all be on tap.

Leave the "gateway crafts" at the door - Sweetwater and New Belgium"

NERD ALERT. I would argue that Rogue is much more of a 'gateway craft' than NB or Sweetwater. But whatever. I myself only drink, and blog about, beers that are so underground they haven't been brewed yet.

I read that comment on the blog site and found it to be rather funny actually. And the comment the one poster wrote about OMB not being very good is nuts, he may not like the style but they are really well made and true to their German styles. Some people confuse beers they don't care for with poor quality beers. I generally prefer well balanced beers over really hoppy ones. That does not mean they are bad beers just bad for my taste buds. I would really like to see someone offer up a good selection of Belguim beers on draft.

First of all I'd like to say that I LOVE that we have a beer thread...second of all, has anyone had any of the Bear Republic beers? Racer 5 is da bomb diggy for you IPA fans. Hop Rod and Red Rocket are pretty much the shiznik too. My wife is from Healdsburg, CA where the Bear Republic brewery/restaurant sits which is why I am so partial to it (we had a keg of Racer 5 at our wedding!). They started a brewery in Cloverdale, CA also to keep up with nationwide demand. It is new to the east coast and NC and I do recommend trying it.

ps. I do consider myself to have a pretty good sense of what good beers are and what are not, though I am a fan of the hoppy stuff, which happens to be what the Bear specializes in.

Bells brewery makes Oberon also. You better add them to your gateway list. They started out in a small warehouse just outside of Kalamazoo ,MI,and were known as the Kalamazoo Brewing Company. They expanded a couple years back and are known as Bells Brewing. I believe their distribution is about as big as New Belgium. And I still think a Fat Tire on Draft is something special. These were the guys that went against the big breweries. And I believe the so called underground beers are around because of their success

hah! I realized that too, he listed "Bells" and "Oberon" as if they were 2 different brands. That post just reeks of Appalachian State freshman.

It makes me want to say to whoever posted it "I remember my first beer."

yeah. Even though I tend to go for the hoppy side of beer(love Dales) Old Chub is my favorite. I've always liked Scottish Ales and Old Chub is one of the best tasting. It also gives me a smooth mellow buzz that is so differant then other beers Smiley

story time with buttholeface:
several years ago my wife and I volunteered with the Charlotte SPCA and we were supposed to have a booth at Charlotte Oktoberfest. It was pretty poorly planned by our contact at Octoberfest, but basically Weeping Radish didn't show up so they put us in their booth space. Right in the middle of all the other brewers and not out in the non-beer info section.

So this guy comes up- "ALL RIIIGHT! Are you from Weeping Radish?"
"Hey there! No, they didn't show up. We're with SPCA. Wanna hear about our spay/neuter program?"
(dude becomes crestfallen, looks baffled) "The program says this is the Weeping Radish booth!"
"It's supposed to be. But they didn't show up so we got their space. Do you know about our pet adoption program?"
"Weeping Radish is my favorite beer! I haven't had their (name of beer) in over a year!"
"yeah, they told us it was a popular booth at this event..."
(with increasing intensity) "The whole reason I came here was to have some Weeping Radish!!! Are they coming late?"
"We don't know. They just didn't show up."
"WELL WHAT HAPPENED? DID THEY GET A FLAT TIRE?!?! DID THEY CALL OR ANYTHING??!??"
this went on for at least 3 more minutes. And it was early in the day before everyone gets hammered.

anyway....must be good. People go nuts over it.

    Beer Theories

    Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed.  Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams.  If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered.  I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

        Babe Ruth
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        "I feel sorry for people who don't drink.  When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
        Lyndon B. Johnson
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        "When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading."

        Paul Horning
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        "24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case.  Coincidence?  I think not."
        H. L. Mencken
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        "When we drink, we get drunk.  When we get drunk, we fall asleep.  When we fall asleep, we commit no sin  When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.  So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"

        George Bernard Shaw
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
        Benjamin Franklin
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer.  Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."

        Dave Barry
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        BEER: HELPING UGLY PEOPLE HAVE SEX SINCE 3000 B.C.!
        W. C. Fields
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        Remember, "I" before "E," except in "Budweiser."

        Professor Irwin Corey
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        To some it's a six-pack; to me it's a Support Group -- Salvation in a Can!
        Leo Durocher
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

        One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy, Norm:

        "Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this..  A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo.  And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members!  In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.  Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells.  But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.  In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine!  That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."
