I was in the San Francisco bay area this past weekend and tried some really good brews. Pliny the Elder had to be my favorite. I checked a bag just to bring a couple home. As always, a stop at my favorite Brewery, the Bear Republic was necessary and was not dissapointed. I would still give the Racer 5 a close 2nd to Pliny.

If anyone likes stouts and porters, Mac's (specifically the one in Steele Creek) is having "Darkvember". They put MANY great dark beers on tap for the month of November. They have a 2009 Bell's Expedition and a 2010 Expedition, so you can try them side by side. The Aged Expedition is excellent! Mac's is my new favorite place.

SKnees, I know what you are doing; you're trying to make sure that this thread remains longer than the Carbon Bar one.  I agree, it has way more merit, so I'm trying to help with it also.  Do you know of any pubs that have Mackeson Triple Stout on draft? This stuff is the bomb.

I think it would be a stretch to get it around here. It is a mighty tasty beer though.

I'm not so worried about the beer blog outmatching the carbon thread, but it did remind that I wanted to post that about Mac's. Go on a Monday for half price pints and it's like heaven on earth...they also sell half pints (8oz glasses) which gives you the opportunity of trying more different beers than you usually would on a week night.

(thanks for adding a post though...bwahahaha)

Macs at Steel Creek has a great selection on tap. I'll have to stop by to try these winter brews soon.

We are always available for a sampling of the Piny  Wink.

I'm a stout fan myself.  The Oatmeal and Chocolate stouts are my faves.  Java stouts come in at second.  My favorite one right now is Young's Double Chocolate Stout.  Man that stuff is smooth with no bitter after taste!

And if you're in the Davidson area you need to check out Healthy Home Markets' selection of brews!  Truly amazing for a small chain like this.  Or if you want it on tap check out the Brick House.  Here's what they normally keep on draft... I went to this event a few years back put on by Bell's called the 10 stouts of November. Bell's had 10 stouts out then. They had a bourbon stout that was out of this world. I still love Bell's Porter, my first serious craft beer. I've been craving Pisgah's porter for a couple of weeks now. I gotta get to black mountain. As for carbon, read Rivendell's take on it (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) They speak the truth Cool

I much prefer Gordon or Old Chub.  I need to try their Gubna Beer.

I was wondering if any of our local homebrewers had grown hops?  I am looking at growing some Cascades.  When I was in Germany I saw a lot of commercial hop operations.  It looks like their is some regional interest at the NC Agr Ext in growing hops and barley:

I understand completely. LOL. If I am planning to set something aside, I have to buy two so I can still drink one and forget about the other one. But even that is easier said than done.

I too feel the need to jump on this thread now that the carbon bar alert has overtaken it.  Cool

Anyway, I was in San Francisco this week for work, and had a very unique brew at the Rogue Ale House. It started with the Imperial Chocolate Stout, which was fabulous on tap, but that's not really the unique brew I'm talking about. I was trying to get my buddy to branch out from the C-Light bottled water, pointed to a Kriek Rasberry Lambic that he might like to try, and the bartender asked if I've ever mixed the Rasberry Lambic and the Chocolate Stout...uh..no, never thought of that I said.

Talk about a new twist on dessert...at least for me that is....50/50 Kriek Rasberry Lambic and Rogue Imperial Chocolate Stout...I'm a chocolate nut, but don't like the mix of rasberry and chocolate that most folks do, so thought I'd hate it.....NOT.....It was crazy good.

I've considered growing hops. The local home brew supplier Sells hop rhizomes in the spring.

You can usually find Lagunitas IPA at Total Wine on woodlawn/park. the Grapevine sells it too, but it is about 25 minutes south in fort mill, sc.

And you would probably really like Bear Republic's Hop rod rye. It's a rye IPA that has won many best beer titles. Also at the Grapevine...and Mac's if you want a cold one.

So how does this beer thread work?

Do we argue about strength VS long term use VS home brewing to avoid being marketed?

I need a new topic to beat to death, and this thread is falling behind.
