Help Wanted - Ride two miles with me
04/04/11 at 2:39pm
Print Post
This is the easiest "Help Wanted" post you'll ever see from me. I need help getting as many Tarheel Trailblazers as possible to join me for the Bike Charlotte Event, Mayor's ride/Bike to Breakfast on Friday morning 4/29. Details in the link below.

Most people don't realize this could be the most important ride you can ever take, simply for the fact that the Mayor and other gov't officials see us. It creates a presence that we're part of this community.

Please do everything you can to take a little time off work and join me. Wear a Tarheel Trailblazer club jersey if you have one, and ride your mountain bike vs. your road bike. We'll take you on any bike, but it's a better statement if we're all on mountain bikes.

If you're a member and don't have a club jersey or t-shirt, try and ask a friend who's in the club to let you borrow a jersery just for the ride. I have three extra jerseys I'd be willing to let fellow members wear for the ride only just to sport our colors.

If you're interested in helping out with the I-277 Colonade Project, consider this your first trail work day. We'll need big corporate sponsorship money to make this happen, so come out and be seen downtown where a lot of money and power reside.

If you love a certain trail that mostly stays under the radar, but might like to see it big and bold on the radar, come out in club colors and be seen.

If you'd like to see free ride in our area, come out in club colors and be seen. The more gov't officials and corporate executives see the club supporting community events, the more we wipe out that old stigma from that stupid mtn dew commercial from years past that made us look like a bunch of yahoos.

Your club leaders are trying to make more of an effort to get out and get connected politically, and this is an easy task that anyone can do. Think about the publicity we might get if a group of 200 riders all in similar club jerseys are photographed and get shown on the nightly news. Publicity and awareness of what we do is a cumulative effect, and this is something easy and fun. Good free breakfast too.

President - Tarheel Trailblazers

Let's tack another 1.4 miles onto this trip, shall we?

Last year, a group of Trailblazers and Dirt Divas met in the parking lot of Uptown Cycles, and we rode as a group to the Dowd YMCA for the Mayor's Ride.  Parking is scarce around the Y, and also it looks pretty cool to have a big group of us roll in together to the start the ride.  Let's try it again this year.

We'll meet at Uptown Cycles (1432 West Morehead Street) at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29th, which will give us plenty of time to ride on over to the Dowd Y and gather with the Mayor's ride folks.

Like Edward said, wear your club colors.  Beg, borrow, or whatever you have to do to wear a Trailblazers (or Divas) t-shirt or jersey.

Another important thing:  Ride your mountain bike!   Smiley

We are a mountain bike club, and although this ride is on the street it's short enough that road bikes are not needed.

Any questions just reply to this thread, or you can PM me for details.

Let's get a huge turnout this year on fat tires!

Post up if you're in, and we'll see you at Uptown Cycles.

Thanks,

Chris Muddiman
Vice President - Tarheel Trailblazers

I could possibly do this.
I'd need more details as I'd be playing hooky from work.
Also, I could use a jersey, size Large.
Are there any available to purchase at all? If so, how much? Who to pay? etc..

I'll bring three of my personal club jerseys for folks to borrow, all large, and also some of my personal club t-shirts for folks to borrow.

I'll have to let someone else answer about any remaining jerseys. I'm just not sure if we have any left from the last run.

I can be there too. I'd be playing hookie from work, but I work in the building next to the Dowd Y, so I can take an early lunch break. I don't have a shirt either. I wear an XL if anyone else has one.

I plan on attending, but if the government shuts down, it could throw a shovel in my plans.  I'm told if they shut down, I may be required to work without pay, and will not be allowed to take annual leave.  It's crazy I know, but that's how we roll.  I'm hopeful I'll be there sporting my Trailblazer jersey.   Smiley

There has been a change...

Okay folks, there is a slight modification to the "Tarheel Trailblazers Before the Mayor's Ride" Ride (catchy, huh?).  The meeting location has been moved to Queen City Bicycles.  We will still be meeting at 7:00 a.m. to ride to the Dowd YMCA, and the distance is exactly the same (1.4 miles.)  It will be a much nicer ride too, since we will be traveling through the tree-lined Dilworth neighborhood on our way to the Mayor's ride.

Why the change?

Bart from Queen City Bicycles has graciously offered to let us meet in the parking lot of his shop, and he will open the shop for those of you that need a place to change your clothes.  Queen City Bicycles (formerly Southpark Cycles) is a big supporter of both the Tarheel Trailblazers and our local cycling community as a whole, so it would be great for us to show our love by kicking off our club ride from the shop.  Come on out and join your fat-tire friends as we roll to the Mayor's Ride sporting our club gear.

Where:  Queen City Bicycles
            1408 East Boulevard
            Charlotte, NC
(Behind Brixx Pizza and Outback Steakhouse)

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

When:  Friday, April 29th at 7:00 a.m. (ready to roll shortly thereafter)

Why:  To show your support for cycling in Charlotte

If you have any questions, you can PM me or reply to this thread.

Thanks,

Chris Muddiman

If I'm not working I'll be there. Maybe we can add an additional ride over to the site of the I-277 Colonade and do some dreaming?

Just a reminder folks, the ride is tomorrow morning!  Smiley

Hope to see a big turnout at Queen City Bicycles for our "Ride to the Mayor's Ride!"

We'll meet 7:00 a.m., gather up, and roll out about 7:10 to make it on time.  It looks like we may have a special escort to the ride as well, so you don't want to miss that.

I hope to see everyone there!

What a good time and a great showing by the Trailblazers!  Thanks to Bart at Queen City Bicycles for opening his shop for us and to Chris Muddiman for leading us to the Dowd Y for the start of the Mayor's Ride.

A great turnout, I would estimate 250 or so riders, including Brian Malec's son Patrick, without a doubt the youngest pedaler out there at barely 4 years!  Train up a child!

As usual, Neal Boyd put on a great event, thanks to Ruth's Cris for breakfast and Chic-fil-a for the coffee and fruit...

Next year we need 1,000 cyclists to make the event!

it was a good turn out.  I had a camera rolling, but somewhere in the ride the vid got stopped.  That is what i get for trying to spy camera it.  So i hope some of you others got a good vid/pics.  Great to see all the blazers and other riders too that showed.  I thought it was awesome as we rolled in to the lot at the dowd Y about 20 deep that someone there said "Here come all the mountain bikers, and wow they came in force".

Big thanks to everyone that came out.  We had a huge crowd riding from Queen City Bicycles.  Thanks to Bart for allowing us to meet there (and for the coffee), and also for the CMPD officers that lead the way.  I can't wait for next year.

Here is a slide show from the photos I took out there:

I hate we missed it this year.  I had every intention of me and the little guy going (and trying to talk dodo into it, too), but realized I had already signed up to volunteer  with the special olympics through work.  Two good causes on the same day -- tough decision.

Hope to be there again next year with another little one in tow.
