Trailblazers won ANOTHER REI Grant!

The club has won another $10,000 grant from REI!  A huge thanks to David Drummond, our grant writer, and to Mark Sullivan for having projects ready to go for the club.  Mountain biking in Charlotte is only getting better with these funds that are going to be partially focused on the trails at Park Road Park, and also on upgrading our tools and trail counters.

If you shop at an REI, please be sure to thank the staff on behalf of the club.  The Trailblazers have benefited from REI grants for 7 years now, and their contributions have funded many miles of trail.

Very nice! I spoke with someone on the trail the other day who bought their new bike @ REI because they appreciated the funding and support the club had gotten from REI for the new addition @ Beatty. Very Cool.

So here's a brief break down of what the money is being used for:

1. $4300.00 will be spent at Park Road Park for Kiosks, bridges and boardwalk.

2. $3500.00 will be spent to add 6 more trail counters.  This will put trail counters at the following trails:
Park Road Park, Back Yard Trail, Renissiance, North Meck, Signal Hill and Jetton Park.  We currently have 4 counters at LNSP, 1 at Fisher Farm Park and one at Sherman Branch.  We will also be launching 2 counters (one for bikes and one for all users) at Beatty to put some concrete usage numbers on paper to help leverage P&R for land.

3. $2,200.00 will be spent on hand tools: McLeoads, Pulaskis, round and flat shovels and a couple of heavy duty wheel barrows.

Just waiting for the check to hit my mail box!

Mark

BTW Mr. Gravitythief76, you and your cohorts better start putting together numbers and start planning for that project you want at Beatty next year!  Wink

Got hit Renni with it in a few places first.  May do Beatty in the Summer, too.  Got another 5 miles of trail to layout at Fisher...

Well here's the first thing we bought with the 2013 REI grant.  What luck they were having a weekend sale that gave us 20% off!  That's about $2,000 worth of tools for $1600. Smiley

Just saw this...Great news...Makes me very glad I bought my new bike (Cannondale RZ 120 One) there.  I spend a ton of money at REI.  Glad that it goes partially to good causes.

BTW what are trail counters?

Justin:
The trail counters are used to record the traffic on a trail. We use the data to point to the land managers how their resource is being used. We can use the data all the way to the national level to underscore how popular trail recreation is.
There are two types we use here. One is a metal sensing unit that records wheeled vehicles. The other is an infrared device. It measures warm bodies.

Tom,

Thanks for the information.  Cool, I didn't know we used that type of thing.  Learning something new each day.  So glad I have found such a great resource in the THTBs.

Thanks,

Justin
