Project PVC Bike Stand
06/13/13 at 9:56pm
Print Post
I'm about to start off my next project which is too build a bike stand for 6 bikes(mtb). There are lots of pics and sketches of peoples creativity with PVC to build a bike stand.

I was wondering if anyone here has attempted to build a bike stand out of pvc and how it turned out. Any pics? I'm also open to suggestions (other materials etc)

This is what I had in mind:

There was a post that I read on how to make it sturdy, and that was too fill it with sand before cementing it. Also spray paint it to the color of my choice.

I built one about two months ago out of pvc... Turned out very well... Didnt look too close at your dimensions but ill see if i can dig up my specs i used. I went with 1 1/4 pvc i think and it turned out well. The only challenge is that the pvc paste dries almost instantly so your stand can get a bit warped... Give me a call if you want to discuss or just catch up sometime... Smiley

I built one just like that for 4 bikes about 5 years ago.  Worked well for about 3 of them then started cracking from the constant use on the 2 "most used" bikes.  for the ~50 it cost me, if i ever need another one, i would do it again.

Did you use 1" pipes? The don't like the sound of this cracking with frequent use.

Linus,

I built one of these for my truck bed 2 years ago. It works well for the truck. I am sure you could modify for 5 bikes.
Instructions are here and relatively simple.

I have made some small modifiactions that help the bike sit better.
If you need some help let me know or PM

Wood is good.
If you are on budget it would be a bunch cheaper and better IMO.
I've found that hanging them by the wheels from the ceiling takes up much less usable space.
I've got room for 5 in my garage and not one wheel touches the floor with one in the repair stand.

I built this for 3 bikes about 8 years ago:

Took up a bunch of space but was very useful.

Unfortunately it didn't fit in the garage when we moved so I gave it away to a Trailblazer.  Forget who.

Big Ron, I saw that truck bed bike rack as well. Wondered how well it worked out. Good to know. I'll ping ya if I need any help.

SurlyDave, Not looking to build out of wood as I have very limited tools. But the more I think about this the better it sounds. The wood is more sturdy than the PVC. I'm off to Homedepot to see what wood options can be used to build a stand, I'm thinking 1x1 should work just fine. Also I cant flip my bikes over or stand them upright as they will need bleeding everytime I do...magura hydraulics...

Dodo, that stand looks great. I like the idea of having a shelf built onto the top. Very practicle indeed.

Thanks for all the tips.

That rack is made from 1.5 inch PVC.  I have some leftover elbows and T's if you want them.  I was about to see if the Habitat Restore wanted them.

My current garage rack is wood and I will take a picture and post tonight.

I more I think of this, the more I prefer wood. Looking forward to seeing your pics, Dodo

Yes those pics of the 2 x 2 wood frames is what I had in mind.
You'll have $20 tied up in fittings alone with the PVC design you posted.

Also you can park a bunch of bikes in row by hanging them from the nose of the saddle.  Build 2 tallish A frames with a pipe connecting them. Set the height so the front wheel touches the floor when hooking the saddle nose on the pipe. That is prolly the easiest parking rack you could set up.

Thanks dodo and SurlyDave for the valuable input. Man those are a lot of bikes. I like the idea of the shelf too. Keep it practical and another place to dump bike stuff.

I was tossing the idea around of building a stand to park the bikes by the seatpost too. Could be very sturdy...will see.

Going to build me something tomorrow as a Dad's Day project. Going to be yielding a circular saw, hoping not to cut anything more than just the wood, especially with those angled cuts.

PVC fittings are definitely the expensive part.  I have some 1.5 inch ones (elbows, T's) if anyone wants them.  Next weekend they will be gone.
