1st timer to poston questions

i found out poston is just as close as any of the other trails in charlotte (excluding byt and renni) so I’m going to try and venture out there.  i have a few questions before i make the drive

1. is a dh bike required?
2. will I need a full face helmet?
3. are the climbs too intense for ss?
4. can I use a 29er?  (somewhere I read only 26 were allowed?)

1.  No.
2.  No.
3.  Depends.  I have ridden it SS in the past when I was in better shape but it would probably be too much for me now.
4.  Yes.
5.  Pedal faster.

It is not a difficult trail, but it tends to be narrower than our other local trails with some sharp turns and features which can catch you off guard if you are not paying attention.  Be mindful of that and you'll have fun regardless of your bike or skill level (except maybe absolute beginner).

1. Yes if you are taking the lift.
2. Yes if you like your face.
3. Only if you aren't taking the lift.
4. Yes, unless you are riding with Btalley.
5. It might scare you at first but Tiles and Shart are very gentle.

print one of these to carry w you (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) or not, and you'll be fine.  saturday morning is a workday so if you're out before lunchtime, watch out for magical gnomes improving the trails.  one was questioned after being caught working today and the trail is now dry, free of debris, and clear for STRAVA shattering times.

Y'all work on those trails? I just though it was a Darwinistic experiment of trail evolution.  Cheesy

Honestly, I see new features and trail work almost every time I ride poston. IMO that's why the trail never closes. They love their trail. Working on it, riding it, and making sure others can ride when ever they feel the need.

That Btalley guy cant even ride a bike, dont listen to him.

I have heard that 29ers must only ride within the dawg park

i survived.  fun trail, will try to work it in to the rotation.  however i do have a few comments:

1.  IMO all the trees that are spraypainted for removal should stay.  they are not too close to the trail where they present that much of a hazard, i only hit one of them

2.  orange fence is covered in kudzu and hard to see.  someone should do some brush maintenance so it remains visible

Good to know about the trees. We were trying to get a grant to have them all removed, but I guess REI doesn't see it as worthy.

We will work on installing another layer of fence on the other side of the kudzu. So it will be even stronger.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the feedback.

Why would you need to see the fence?  I thought the purpose of the fence was to catch you if you overshot the jump.  Seems it would be desirable to be covered with Kudzu so it's not so noticeable.

idk construction fence is not gonna stop 200+ lbs of rider+bike moving at moderate speeds lol imho.  seems like it better serves it purpose as a warning that the trail does not continue there iykwim.

although you might be on to something, they should put up a beefy chain link fence or something.  someone should tell the trail leader coardinater.

also i will request they put nets under the creek gaps so they will be less scary if you undershoot.  or maybe a foam pit

We feel chainlink would distract from Nature and would look out of place, which is why we chose the orange safety fence, to blend better.

We have discussed the idea of using foam pits or old mattresses for cushioning under the gaps, but with our current budget its just not feasible. We have however found a deal on some used refrigerators so we will be filling in all the gully's and gaps with those. Hopefully they will help break the fall in case you come up short.

Again thanks for the feedback.

P.S. we have been installing safety signs and they are being stolen. FWIW

The fence is to stop oblivious people from flying into never-never land by catching their attention.  If it can't catch their attention, it certainly can't catch their body.  The trail turns. Cheesy

Seems to me, and I'm just spit ballin' here, that if I'm riding on a trail and hit a jump that I shouldn't be aiming for a pile of Kudzu.  But that's just me. Wink

with that logic you wouldn't need the fence at all because if you hit a jump you shouldn't be aiming down an embankment

i think keeping it visible is part of the warning system, no?

i can't find the other thread for some reason but i think that was some of the reasoning
