What full squish 29er's should I be looking at?

Wants:

Carbon preferred, but aluminum will do
XC oriented, but Pisgah worthy (not groomed Bent creek Pisgah)
Light, but not fragile

Not wants:

Specialized
Trek
Gary Fisher

I am way out of the loop on new bikes and the new goods, so I thought I would start my search by asking here. I will probably buy a complete bike off the shelf since my parts inventory has seen better days. My current bike is a 2007 Sultan and consider it the best frame that I ever owned. The new sultan leans slightly more all mountain than the 2007 version, so it's off the list for now.

Niner is on the list. What else is there? Thanks.

Santa Cruz Tallboy!

Got one last summer and love it.

I think the Tallboy LT would be good too, maybe a little better for big hits in the mountains. The Tallboy does great on trails to soak up the small stuff nicely, but suffers a little with rougher terrain. Overall though, it is a good climbing efficient ride.

Well... I have  Trek Fuel Ex 8 and love it, so not sure where the hate comes from. But I understand sometimes, stylistically, you just don't like certain brands.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy LT and Niner Jet 9 Carbon or RDO would be my first choices if I wanted to drink the Kool Aid (I've thought about it, but again stuck with the 26 inch Fuel ex). I've seen some nice Rocky Mountain 29ers as well (Element I think) and the Salsa Spearfish and Horse thief look sweet too. Just my .02.

I rode the 2013 Salsa HorseTheif at the First Flight Bikes - Salsa demo

At LNSP last year. This is a bike I'm not really interested in for my type of

Riding I do but, I wanted to check it out for the hell of it, and I was really

Impressed how well it climbed considering the amount of FS travel it has.

Going down hill I felt like Superman. The bike gives you a lot of confidence on

what it will handle. Cheesy

+1 Tallboy or Tallboy LT, pedals like a dream uphill.  Plus SC carbon is bad ass, just check out Pinkbike for the video of them using a carbon frame like a baseball bat...

If you like the Turner overall, except for more travel making it slower and harder to petal, I bet the DW suspension design has more than improved pedaling over the TNT design in 2007 even with more travel.  I felt like my 2011 DW spot petaled at least a gear better than my 2008 TNT.  Don't know about the weights and its effect.

I got to believe that Czar will petal much better than a 2007.  Not even going to look at the price of that.

Got to look over a Niner RDO Jet. Seemed like a nice bike. I rode a friends Regular Jet and was pretty impressed.

The new 2014 Niner Jet 9 with air formed Al tubing and 100 mm rear suspension travel looks impressive.

A RDO is high on my list right now. I have a lead on one and have been studying up on them.

Get a Santa Cruz Solo, or, if you're man enough, a Santa Cruz Bronson.

Seriously though an Ibis Ripley may be the perfect blend of XC/trail bike.

So far, I have confirmed that I am further behind on the new gear than I thought. Slightly better off than the guy wearing the styrofoam bowl helmets with neon accents.

I have a Niner Jet 9 and have been very pleased with it, and I'm not even that big of a rear squish fan. It climbs so well I sometimes forget it's rear squish. I think Cyclepath built it up for me roughly a couple years ago, and I like it more as time goes on.

I'm closer to 50 vs. 40 now, and it's getting harder for my back to ride my hardtail when the ride gets close to 4 hours in the saddle.

Are there any shops in the Charlotte area that will have Niners or Santa Cruz bikes on the floor?

I have not been in a bike shop (other than Performance Bike for necessities) in so long that I dont know who sells what any more.

So what's it like to shop for a bike when for the most part none of them suck? sure makes me miss the bad old days of "innovation" with cool things like Y bikes and linkage forks... the term monkey motion had to come from somewhere.

enjoy the "hunt"!
