I enter a gravel grinder later this summer, so I figure with all this rain, I might just find some ways of training. Anybody know or some good dirt/gravel roads close by. Will riding on asphalt help?

;
to shorten ride and have less pavement take a right onto Brushy Mtn Road instead of the left when you come to the end of Bethany Church Rd. turn left onto Van Hoy Ridge rd which picks the course back up and also back to gravel.
lots of good grvel up that way, lots more than just that route, you just have explore which is part of fun

"Ride fast."
With a gun...
It's been my (very fortunate) experience thus far that most dogs are much more interested in chasing you and making a big show of it than they are in catching you.
I've only had one dog actually try to bite me and it was...wait for it... a chihuahua. Hit my ankle twice. A swift kick to the head sent him staggering off home. No wasted ammo there.
I tell my wife to carry pepper spray (more for dogs) when she runs.
Just find some quieter network of roads in a residential area near you. They often wind around for several miles off through wooded areas and you can get a good workout with minimal exposure to major surface streets.
Probably not the answer you really wanted, but if you actually find "gravel / dirt roads" around here they'll probably be as muddy, waterlogged, and torn up as the trails with all this rain.
