Visiting Family.....

Hey guys, I am going to be visiting family in the area the 24th to 29th and wanted to see if I could get some input on what places are worth checking out while i'm down there.

I ride a rigid SS 29er running 33x19 and am used to SE PA, NJ, and DE trails. I can never give up an oportunity to check out more trails so I am bringing my MTB and road bike along with us for the trip. I already have some epic road rides planned so will pushing a 33x19 at your local spots be tough?

Any input would be awsome, I plan on getting my rides in early morning, any issues I should be aware of with that? And did I see that you guys need to pay to get to some of your trails?

Thanks in advance.....
Ryan

lots of ppl like sherman branch is ss friendly (most trails here are w/ exception of a few climbs)

the pay ones are:
anne springs ($5?)
rocky river ($3 donation)
usnwc (parking $3? or $5? idk)

there are plenty of free options too

I'll be in Waxhaw, so I think from what I was that Sherman Branch and Anne springs were the closest. Would a rigid SS be fun at Anne with the roots I was reading about... I think Ill only MTB two days so I'd rather drive a little further for some nice fun flowy trails...

honestly i would skip anne springs for beatty if you want to stay on that side of town
i have not been to either in a few years but hear beatty has made improvements
im sure others will chime in on trail selection
i dont think rigid will be an issue anywhere

I think Betty is closer to Waxhaw than Sherman but if you're going to ride 1 to 2 trails in Charlotte, I'd recommend WWC.
IMHO, WWC (white water center) is the most versatile trail around here, good miles, has climbs, small downhills, technical, fast and fun.  I think 33x19 rigid is also perfect for it.

I live just nw of Waxhaw.  It would be worth a little extra drive to skip Anne Springs and Beatty.  Both are good but WWC and Sherman would be my preference.
WWC and Sherman are about equal drive time from here.  30 minute drive to either give or take a few minutes.

It sucks to be harassed by assholes in cars while you’re on a bike. It also sucks to drive behind assholes on bikes.

Wow you guys are great. Thanks for the quick responses and suggestions. Yea, most of the drives to my favorite trails now are 30min to an hour and I am fine with that. Any road riders with some key roads or routes that are nice. I know it’s a broad question, but coming from flat monotonous South Jersey, I am looking forward to some climbs and different scenery.

When I visit my brother I ride Middle Run/White Clay in Newark.  I think Sherman is closest to this in terms of flow/elevation.  The creek crossing at Middle Run is much harder though!

I second the recommendations on Sherman Branch and White Water Center. One other thing you might consider, though it's a longer drive from Waxhaw, is Lake Norman State Park. If you want fast, flowey, mostly smooth trail and plenty of mileage, LNSP would fit the bill perfectly. Lots of sweeping, momentum-type of dips and turns with views of the lake. Just over 30 miles of it, comprised of several loops so you can taylor your ride. I don't do SS (gave that up with pleasure when I got my first geared bike), but I can't think of a more SS friendly trail than LNSP. It's a long drive from Waxhaw, but an easy, direct drive straight up I-77. If it were me, I'd substitute that for one of your road rides; it would be way cooler under the trees but won't beat you up any more than the road.

I'd second the recommendation to make the longer drive to LNSP if fast and flowy is what you're after, or even a little farther to Warrior Creek in Wilkesboro if you want the best flow that can be found in the region (in my humble opinion).

Definitely Sherman Branch though for something nearer you. USNWC sounds a little rough on a rigid to me, but I don't ride one so IDK.

Thats one of my favorite local places a good amount of miles, and the some fun TTFs.. And creek crossings are a welcomed addition to these hot rides.

we have been having a lot of rain here lately. And unlike other parts of te country, they close trails when wet. I would head to the western mountains. Bent Creek outside of Asheville is very SS friendly. Also DuPont near Brevard. If you want to save stress on your legs, pick up a new cog  from Endless Bikes (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) A local NC company Smiley

And we altough we don't "Close" the trails, the majority or riders using the ones I frequent know when you shouldn't be riding and to go to a few of the places that seem to act like a strainer and never get mushy.

33x19?  Go everywhere.

I run 34x20 right now and it works great for me at Sherman, LNSP, WWC, Fisher Farm, .............

The more technical trails kill me though like BYT for example. But that's probably my less than stellar athletic ability and fondness for pilsner
