how to get new trails made?

I live in the ballantyne area and went for a ride at elon park to see if there was a trail. to my surprise there was no trail. there is an 18 hole disc golf course. I just started to ride around it and got some yelling and some head nods. I was cautious of entering a hole and looked if someone was playing. if so then I turned around and went back looking for another way.

from what I can tell on maps, there is a lot of land there for a potential trail.

How would one go about getting a trail made? it would be nice as there is ample parking and I live across the street from it.

Bissell Properties owns all that. They are in the commercial real estate business. They have a lot going on right now.
I would LOVE to ride on their golf course. With a Dirt bike like a Honda cR500.
Always dreamed about destroying a golf course with my rear tire. Smiley

I know Bissel owns most of the land in ballantyne. But Elon Park is a Charlotte park. Would there have to be a request made for a trail or what? When i went today the lady in the recreation center tell me there isnt, but that if i made one then there would be. Dunno if she was serious.

I had a friend go out with 3 of his friends on a golf course on ATV's. Long story short, they had plenty of cop cars and a police chopper after them. It was up in Ohio. roughly $30,000 worth of damage.

Wasn't there some chatter several years ago about TTB building a trail there?  Seems it didn't work out.

Yes. There was chatter about 7 years ago about Elon Homes.  Unfortunately there is barely enough land in the park to make a perimeter loop and the county land next to it that would be better suited is part of the land fill next to the park.

If you go to Mecklenburg Polaris 3G you can look up all the individual parcels that make up the area.

We (Frank P. , Jack C and I)have already been in contact with P&R on this subject over the past 7 years. Unless/until we can get access to the other land (which we probably won't anytime soon) then no MTB trail opportunity exists at that park for now.

For the record, The Trailblazers attended all of the public meetings for Elon Park's planning process and we lobbied for trails. As a result, mountain bike/ mixed use trails ARE part of the official park plan. But as Mark said, only a perimiter corridor was considered and that is all that is available after the county (I believe) contracted with a private party to put in ball fields. We determined to wait to see if there would be room remaining to make a reasonably sized trail, but it doesn't look like it.

Again, I think Mark is correct that the adjoining county property is much better suited to a trail of meaningful length. That's not to say that something could not be built at Elon - it is planned for a trail!

Thanks,
Yeah i just rode around all the disc golf holes and thought about how it could be intertwined with it, but then you have people walking around and using the trail as a shortcut between holes. The soccer fields are a great idea, but living across the street for the past year and a half i can honestly say that i have never seen ALL of the fields being used.

This park was planned several years ago - before Meck P&R ran serious public surveys for their future 10-15 year planning. Those surveys of P&R's constituants confirmed that the number one amenity county residents want in their parks is TRAILS! Playing fields have their place but the use our trails get compared to other use activities in the municipal parks is far and away the best value proposition. P &R recognizes this, in particular because we build and maintain these public trail facilities at no cost to the county. We can continue to reinforce and actually prove that by continued and increased use of trail counters that we previously implemented.

FWIW, contact Mark if you are interested in helping to develop trail near you. It can take time but almost always new trail results from one or a few local folks that want to make it happen.

I had asked Mark about this earlier this year and he sent me a PDF of the master plan.  There are two disconnected sections of “Walking Trail” each about a mile long.  In the southwestern corner of the park near the existing paved greenway trail and creek, there was an area about 100 yards by 300 yards designated for “Mountain Bike Trails”.

There’s also a new park going in behind the Ballantyne Y which has no trails at all.  It’s all soccer and baseball fields.

Very disappointing that out of these two parks in the Ballantyne area, there’s only a couple miles of trail.
