I've put on too much weight this year, and my beard is a lot grayer. Either the weight or old age has caught up with me. I can't even climb small hills anymore without getting out of breath and seeing stars. And it seems that I have lost all motivation. I'm thinking tha after 30 years it may be time to hang it up Tongue Undecided Wink

I was feeling the same way several months ago. Then the wife and I did the Insanity work out. Was really hard at first and still is hard now but I feel a lot better and stronger. I don't recommend this work out for everyone as it is really intense and has the potential to really hurt yourself if you don't go at your own pace.

The same company does P90X too. So my point is doing some cross training and strength training. I only lost a net of 10 pounds but feel tons better.

Don't give up!

Eat nothing but strained Ramen noodles (don't drink the juice), fresh fruits and vegetables, rice cakes and multi-vitamins and drink nothing but bottled water for a couple of months.

And lay off the Marlboros.

Good as new.

+1 on the Ramen Noodles.  Try dropping an egg in when they are almost done.  Egg Drop Ramen!

Pimento cheese, Pabst, and ride 100 miles a week. Works for me.  Wink

Seriously though...eat right and ride your bike as much as possible. Eat nothing but fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains. It sucks but if losing weight and getting in shape was easy we'd all be skinny and fit.

The problem for most people in western society is lifestyle. And we're all guilty of it to some degree. The blessing and curse of modern living and abundant food I suppose.

If you're active enough, the diet practically takes care of itself. If you're not active enough, no amount of restricting the modern diet is enough.

And the problem is, as a society most people just aren't active enough.

Advancing age is another factor.

If, at 50+, you think you can perform and act like you did when you were 25, you're not only deceiving yourself, you may be jeopardizing your health.

So don't hang it up. Just see it for what it is. Your body telling you it's time to make some changes. Changes no doubt for the better.

The sport and the trails in the area are capable of being enjoyed by people of all ages and all fitness levels in the right moderation. In my opinion it's better to concentrate on enjoying the remaining years one has left, rather than fixating on the physical decline that's nothing more than a normal part of the aging process. It could always be worse.

"If you're active enough, the diet practically takes care of itself. If you're not active enough, no amount of restricting the modern diet is enough."

I have to agree with that reasoning. My occupation (Landscraping) keeps me plenty active, sort of akin to how farmers keep active. As I've gotten older I've finally started to reign in the poor eating habits.  Only time I pack on weight is when the trails aren't an option. That used to be due to work, but this damn rain has put a "damper" on my riding as I can't work in the rain and the trails close due to it! The IPA's during down time don't help.

But back on topic, man, don't let a lull in your immediate fitness tune you out to riding. I think that cycling is a key avenue to long, long healthy living and you just may need a little infusion of good times out there on the singletrack.  And a blood test, as that ay help you sleep at night! Nothing like an "all clear" from a trusted physician! Smiley

Sounds pretty sad, I think you should give up.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I understand the sentiment of the OP, however, I just focus on the fun of it all and not how well I do it. If I have to walk up something, I don't worry about it. I just enjoy the downs that much more. Ride more.
