XX1 Not Quiet/Smooth

I got an XX1 crankset (not the whole setup, just the crank and chainring) and made my bike 1x10.  Since having the crankset and new BB installed, the bike makes sort of a grinding/crunching sound/feel when pedaling.  Shifting all works fine and seems the same as it was before, but pedaling is never smooth (like there is some metal on metal somewhere).  The cassette, RD and chain are Shimano.  Any thoughts on what might be causing this?  I know I probably just need to have a mechanic look/listen/feel, but just curious if this seems like something obvious.

How much wear on your chain.  I know when I put a used rear cog on my singlespeed I get a vibration as it hasn't worn in the same way as the old cog (does that make sense?).

That'd be my first question.  Wear on the cassette and chain will exhibit that kind of symptom when put on a new ring/crank.

I'd say that it is the Shimano chain not playing well with the XX1 crank. Sram designed the XX1 chain rings' teeth profiles to work with the XX1 11 speed chain.  Also, if you changed to the XX1 chain, you will have problems with the shifty bits at the back end, shifting would most likely be pretty poor.

Actually I read that the XX1 rings are designed to work with any 10 spd chain as well as the 11 spd SRAM one. I've also heard of ppl doing exactly what the OP did, using an XX1 crank for 1x10, without problems.

Weird question? but does it sound like your chain has sand in it when you are putting pressure on the cranks? I have the Raceface narrow wide on my bike (and it doesn't happen all the time) but I get this weird sound like my drivetrain is covered in sand. I know it is not the cassette, chain or adjustment ...Cassette and chain are brand new. I even swapped a brand new KMC 10 speed chain and replaced with brand new shimano 10 speed chain and noise is still present.

I'm too old for the big ring. That's why I only have one

The bike was new, so all parts are new and I replaced the 3x crankset with XX1 crankset after only a few rides.  I also thought, as someone said, that the XX1 ring was supposed to be compatible with the XX1 11 speed chain, as well as 10 speed chains.  My husband has basically the same setup (1x10 with XX1 crankset), but all of his other components are SRAM, and he doesn't have this issue.  I had wondered if it was the shimano chain, but it seems to fit fine when just spinning the pedals on the stand.

It doesn't feel like sand, but more like a very very fine gravel (larger than grains of sand).

In that case I'd recommend running the XX1 chain.  They're actually not that much compared to the 10 spd SRAM chains.

I'm not certain why, but I thought that the XX1 chain would not play well with the 10 speed shimano cassette and derailleur?  It's not clear to me the difference between the XX1 11 speed chain and a regular 10 speed chain (other than one is 11 speed and one is 10, of course).  Is there a difference between a shimano 10 speed chain and a SRAM 10 speed chain?

Any chance the issue is the BB or something unrelated to the chain?

I'm taking it in tomorrow, so maybe the professionals can figure it out Wink

While i doubt running the xx1 ring with a shimano 10 speed chain is a good idea 10 speed shimano chains are asymetric, are the logos facing outward?

Try the simplest fix first and work up...

Degrease/regrease the drivetrain. In my experience the majority of the drivetrain noises your experiencing come from gunked up chains, cassettes, shifty bits, etc...

Try a new Sram chain(make sure its on properly)

Try a new cassette

Service the BB?

Take it to the LBS Smiley

The XX1 chain is supposed to be slightly narrower in width to grab onto the teeth of the ring.

The KMC chain that I've been using has worked fine with this setup.

Edit: it could also be the pink stickers on your bike as well...
