What bike advice...

Print Post
Hey guys, I am looking for a road bike, but it needs to be plenty versatile...

The primary use would be to ride around the neighborhood with my 1 year old son attached to either the back, or a trailer. It needs to go both on road, paved pathways, and sidewalks. On occasion, I do want to be able to go on a road ride and be able to keep up with people at my fitness level on other road bikes though…. Is there a bike with such versatility?  Not looking for anything high end.   Does this sound like a traditional road bike, or am I looking at something touring, or even cross?  Budget is $800

Thanks

If your riding gravel get a cross bike,  some even have bolt holes for panniers

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

i put my kids seat and trailer on my regular road bike.  I do not ride gravel, but paved paths and all the green ways are no problem.  I use it for road riding and commuting also

Cross/gravel grinder.  I use my for road riding, riding around with the kid, gravel roads, and single track.

I just use my road bike with a trailer on the road.  We don't really ride on sidewalks, but if we did, I'd probably still use my road bike.  If we go on gravel, I pull the trailer with my mountain bike.

I will say, I do have a titanium road bike, and have noticed now that I have 2 kids in the trailer (ages 4 and 2), I definitely stress the  bike quite a bit more than I did when I just had one kid in there.  I am not sure how excited I would be about riding a carbon fiber road bike towing that kind of weight.

That's like buying a Porsche to tow your horse trailer because there might be a road course track near the stables.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I'll be riding gravel, just paved pathways, sidewalks, and road.  So it sounds like a road bike would be able to handle sidewalks.   With my budget, don't think ill be getting anything carbon.

I've got some Redline Conquest road/CX bikes for sale that I could definitely fit into that budget.  How tall are you?

I have a 52cm but think that may be a bit small for you.  You're welcome to test ride it if you want.  I've got it marked down from $1200 to $800 but at this point I'll take any reasonable offer.

Gotta make room for 2014!

Thanks Mark, but yeah 52 cm will be too small.
If you stumble on anything in 54/56, let me know!

Thanks
