Knowing the mixed use nature of the Greenway and the many baby strollers, etc... It's hard for me to believe anyone would be riding those curves so fast.

Can speed bumps be far off?

Sad, but I see it on the MC green way a lot too. Some people ride it way too fast for mixed use.

Greenways are not the place to be setting strava records.  There's just to much liability with all the different types of users, old, young, walkers, runners, strollers, kids on trainers/balance bike.  It's a great place for casual riding and that's about it.  Why people think they can go there and ride at race pace is beyond me.  I had an incident "twice in the same day, on the same outing" where the "same guy" (all suited up in race/mandex attire) almost hit my 2 year old.  I was so close to making a very bad scene out of it.  It's made me think twice about where I take my kids and now am reluctant to take them on the greenway.  Just ashamed of some of the riders out there that think they don't need to slow down around blind spots and when approaching families/elderly/kids/strollers.  This is one time I have to side on the other side of the fence against cyclists (even though I am one).  Don't get me wrong, I'm all for you getting your ride on, but please... please do it in a manner/location that doesn't put anyone at risk.

I go running there and I've also seen the knuckle-heads riding bikes way too fast there. Little kids/older folks/casual riders are great but the lycra road bike types are completely ridiculous.  It's only a 4 or 5 mile stretch  so I could never understand why they even bother. It must be some combination of strava BS and/or stupidity.

i highly recommend bells for greenway use especially when going into/under bridges. you have to learn to not be a sissy when using your bell too, because most pedestrians and runners have 2 ear buds in.

I was trail running at usnwc this week and a mtn biker gave me the bell as he came up behind me. I actually liked it, I'd rather get belled than run over.  Not sissy at all, well maybe a little cute.

My sister and grand nephew use the MC greenway all the time.  Whenever I'm riding with them I watch out for these tools.  I about ran one of the greenway one time.  It's for "CASUAL" recreation. PLEASE!

Bell use is commonplace in cities with more extensive greenway/bikeway networks.  Not sissy or cute, just practical, and more convenient than "on your left" every two seconds.

Bell'ss aside, sometimes kids 2/3/4/5 year old do unexpected things.  Even as a responsible father who tries to ensure they are not all over the greenway, there are times (especially when you have two who like to play and chase one another) when you just can't predict what a kid is going to do.  That said, if a rider is going to ride at pace, then he needs to be responsible enough to do so.  Just as with driving, riders need to be responsible riders and not wreckless/careless.

I'm not a greenway user but last time I checked, there was not any posted speed limits out there. These guys have every right to ride the place as fast as they want, just like the slow people going 4 mph on the local trails with baggy shorts and ear buds cranked up.

If you have issue with someone not riding like you want them too, you should go deal with them there.

They would merely become speed "jumps"

You have to admit though, with toddlers running around it's not the right place to ride 20mph.

I don't condon there actions but, neither do I condon letting "Toddlers" run around willy nilly when I know other users are going to be out there.

True but it really isn't the place to get your Strava on and pretty poor form to not slow down in a blind curve.  If that guy had hit and injured my like that I wouldn't have been too happy or nice to be around. Plus he'd be fishing his bike out of the creek.

The signs there do not have a speed limit, but they do specifically mention that non-bikers have the right of way and also that bikers should announce 'on your left' when passing.

Regardless of the speed issue the rider was a d-bag.

"Poor Form" or not, that is your perspective.  There were 2 people involved here. Sound like they were both on bikes. We are only hearing one side from the local news.

Is speed the issue or a blind curve the problem. It could have been some "Dude" or even a kid flying around there with little to no skill and couldn't hold a line. The article doesn't say.

I never disagreed with this nor did I say they couldn't ride the way they wanted to.  I was quite clear that I'm all for them getting their ride on but if they do, at least do it responsibly given that there are little kids/elderly/other slower users out there.  Even then, my "TODDLERS" (2-5) have only been on the greenway 2-3 times and have not seen the greenway since that incident and no, they were not running around willy nilly.  There's a lot of other folks out there doing things for the first time; kids/teens/adults learning how to Bike/Roller Blade/Skate what have you.  Toddlers are far from the problem and probably represent the smallest user base on the greenways.  To that point, as we can see... it's not a TODDLER that got hit from the story.  We give drivers licenses to drive and let them on the motorways yet make every effort to ensure drivers drive responsibly (including rules/laws and jail time) so as not to be a danger to themselves and the general public.  That said, even though there are no such shared laws for cyclists on the greeway, it still does not exempt them from responsibility given they are the fastest moving objects or does it?  IMBA has guidelines for etiquette to follow on Trails... why at a minimum would this not apply?

FROM IMBA Website:

Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.
