Guns and Roses. Hands down.

(Not really alternative).

Had this conversation about the 90s just the other day. I'm going with Stone Temple Pilots for that one.

No offense on this one boys but GNR where on a different page ..yeah they kinda kicked ass but guess what followed next that has been here for longer than a minute. Anyway GNR don't and wont count on ALternative scene, more like they where the ones who ate up glam rock and shuved it up....So even if they where they could not and shall not ever compare to what the Cure has doe to a many lives...GNR , Slash is a bad ass so no ment to be taken wrong , Just Sayin falls into play on moments like this...Really to each there own and like to hear sometimes the others...

This.

Elvis Costello, Psychedelic Furs, Depeche Mode (which should be at the top of this list, period), Siouxsie And The Banshees.  Duran Duran if you like a little more Pop kind of alt. And of course the Smiths.

BTW I'd rather have a hot poker enema than ever listen to The Cure.  No offense and it's not the band. It's the lead singer's voice.  Reminds of what a Hipster would sound like if they sang.  Tongue  And he looks like Edward Scissorhands.

Best movies with many of these bands....The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink.

Oh, yea.....just sayin'

that is what makes the Cure amazeing, plus the music that is created ..to each there own but his voice is so distinctive such as Getty Lee's voice for Rush and I know your going to laugh but Boy George to, Culture Club was pretty good regardless of what he looks like and what he is but still a great band from the 80's also. Mark I have toa gree with you on your list, kudos for all them bands and one more forgotten INXS...Nuff said for now..oh and one more thing and band to The Smiths killed it, both them and the Cure where helpless Romantics with there music and after all is that not what our generation is.

depends on how you define "alternative." i say the misfits, agnostic front, social distortion, minor threat, black flag, or bad brains. and if youre a local, you cant forget C.O.C.

i lean more on your side of this one, but i dont think those are considered "alt." I always considered alternative stuff, at least from that time frame, as like coffee house music or similar. But then again, i like heavier stuff even though my musical taste is pretty all over the place.

As for the 90s, i throw in a vote for Bush even though thats probly not considered alternative either. Always liked their stuff, and Foo Fighters were killin it in the 90s as well.

I'm on board with this, along with HuskerDu, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, and even Violent Femmes. Bands like Echo and the Bunnymen and Smithereens were also considered "Alternative" back then. I consider alternative to be the stuff you didn't hear on the regular radio channels back in the day. I think you were hard pressed to find most of these bands mentioned on anything but college radio stations back then.

The regular radio stations at that time were too busy playing hair bands and Phil Collins.   Tongue

When traveling in the wilderness always take a compass. It is awkward when you have to eat your friends.
