SS gear for Wilkes area trails...

I've never been to Warriors Creek and the surrounding trails in Wilkesboro.  I'm thinking of doing the Wilkes 100k on the 26th.

In terms of SS gearing, could someone comment on the toughest trail there to one of our local trails?

Much appreciated,

Le

I usually ride 32x20 for Kerr Scott Trails.  Guess that means you could handle 34x17  Grin

Warrior Creek is not a issue and  Dark Mt is similar to Catawba with a little more climbing. I would suggest 32/18 or 19. Neither one of those trails have any flats to pedal on or across so a big gear will do you little good. OVT trail has some sections where you can pedal and gain some speed. I'm not sure if they are doing a road connector.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Thanks Jerry, unfortunately I believe there are a few miles of connector.

You may want to check your sources......  I think that Dark Mountain would be the hardest SS ride, unless they throw in the headwaters loop on Warrior Creek.  Guessing you could handle it with a 32x19 or 18 like Jerry suggested without much problem.  Its been a while since I've been to Steve's but I think the climbing there is steeper than Dark Mountain.  Longest climb I can think of at the Wilkes trails in about a mile and half on Dark Mountain.

You guys could always come up and pre-ride.

W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, USACE Wilmington District

*Update on the government shutdown*

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Wilmington District, is preparing for the closure of its Corps-managed day-use parks on Thursday, October 10 and campgrounds on Friday, October 11 unless fiscal 2014 funding legislation is enacted by Congress. This will have no effect on leased recreation areas operated by state or local entities, such as the Wilkes Skyline Marina. Visitors are encouraged to contact their local park office for information on other nearby facilities that may be available for recreational use.

Customers scheduled to arrive while the potential shutdown is in effect may cancel their reservations for a full refund. These customers may also elect to leave reservations open for possible use after the shutdown is lifted and request a refund for any unused portion of their reservation due to the shutdown. To request a refund please contact NRRS customer service at 1-888-448-1474 (TDD 1-877-833-6777). The reservation service will automatically cancel reservations after a customer’s scheduled departure date during the shutdown period if the park is closed and the customer chooses to do nothing.

We will provide updates as any additional information becomes available.

my question is what are the consequences for accessing the trails during the closure?  If they cant afford to keep it open, does that mean they also cant afford to keep someone there to enforce the closure? hmm...

If someone stops you, just tell them you're a war vet. You'll be a national hero and Michele Bachmann will personally lead your next lap.
