At what price - mountain biking?

Print Post
I work from home and road ride at lunch most days.  Today, I noticed a biker go by the house as I mounted and started out the driveway.  He was a young guy, mid 50s, moving at a really good clip south on Shearers road.   Within a quarter mile a lady passed me and swerved right in front of my tire to turn right onto Faith Road.  Shaken but moving on, about a quarter mile further I come up on the aforementioned biker lying in the road in front of Food Lion, his bike broken in half with the front wheel and handlebars wedged between the bumper of a mail carriers' Jeep.  Two young ladies (in cars) and I pulled up at the same time and checked on the biker (and mail carrier) and called 911.  He was dazed but OK and very happy to be alive.  I left before the ambulance arrived and continued on my loop through Davidson.  Three times before I finished my ride I was ambushed by "gappers."  A gapper is a motorist headed in the same direction as the biker who "shoots the gap" between the biker and an on-coming car in the other lane headed in the opposite direction.  Often, the car coming in the opposite direction runs off the road to avoid hitting the gapper.  Happens a couple times every ride.

All that to say this...I'm a reluctant roadie for the sole purpose of keeping in shape so I can do what I really love on the weekends...Mountain Biking!  Days like today make me question if it is worth it, but as soon as I get on the trail I forget about the gappers, near misses, insensitive drivers and the "could'a beens."   I tell people that I found the Fountain of Youth... on a mountain bike.  I'm not ashamed to say that it makes me feel like I'm ten years old again.  I've tried to explain it to my wife on several occasions, but its just something you have to experience.  We're so fortunate to live in a place that has the best trails in the country.  Kudos and Thanks to the Trailblazers!

I spend more and more time on my MTB vs. roadie. Mostly because it is more fun but also due to the lack of common sense of the roads today. I don't know if it is me getting older and more safety conscious or reality but people are getting more and more aggressive and less willing to wait a nanosecond for common courtesy or the safety of other drivers (let along bikers). I prefer staying on well-beaten bike routes or in group rides if I am on the road. But if it is dry I am in the dirt. Glad to hear that guy came out ok.

I just started road riding and the hardest part is getting used to folks like the OP describes. Gappers, Gunners, A**holes...whatever ya call them. I ride desolate country roads mostly during off peak driving times and I still get nervous. You folks road riding in Charlotte have got a bigger set than the guys hitting gap jumps last week at Rampage. Taking your life in your hands everyday. Stay safe out there...

OP do you ride in the middle of the lane or do you hug the right side of the lane?  I see far too many bicyclists hugging the right hand side which encourages assholes to split the lane w/ the biker.

If you are going to ride on the street.... then act like you belong there and ride in the center of the lane.

Agreed, I don't ride in the center of the lane but I do ride out far enough that it doesn't give a car enough room to go around with another car coming.  You have to make them wait for a open spot.

Totally follow everyone's comments and agree.

Moved to Charlotte 6 years ago . My biking suffered. Hated road riding with the lack of a shoulder and too much traffic. Not worth keeping a road bike for an only opportune ride being Sunday mornings before church crowd lets out...Then its chaos no matter where you go.

Wife and I both sold roadie equipment shortly after moving to the area. Bikes had a good dust covering from not being used. Hate having to drive to trails all the time, but its really the actual safe option.

Now have a beach cruzer and a SS banger for green way cruzes... Stay away from the highways.

Sounds like the roadies around here should do like all the Russian drivers with their dashboard cams. Always have a camera running to catch more of these idiots.

I've thought long and hard about where to ride in the lane.  A DOT study says that riding 1/3 into the lane from the right is the safest (as Chosen* & Yellow* mention).  BUT, their study was based on hypothetical line-of-sight type situations and did not include actual driver attention/reaction, impatience, prejudice, road rage, phone distractions, etc.  I've decided to ride as close to the white line or outside as possible.  I figure that I'd rather trust the ability of an inattentive/unskilled driver to not hit something (me) than pi$$ off someone who may do only God knows what in a rage.

I do have two blinkies on the rear and one on the front.  Also, agree w/Chosen&Yellow, when in town and at intersections I move to the center of the lane and take my place with other "moving vehicles" and use good hand signals.  SNA... good point about the cameras.  A quick review of the video will show who the hit-n-run perp was. Shocked

Can't wait to hit the trails - LNSP on weekends!

Here's something that I suppose most folks don't think much about in regards to road riding.

It seems air pollution is now being labeled as a group 1 agent by the WHO, along with 2nd hand tobacco smoke, asbestos, plutonium, etc.. As though some of us couldn't figure that out on our own.

Another nail in the coffin I guess. Especially when you're huffin' and puffin' in the middle of traffic.

Riding on the white line leavers YOU no option if things do get close. I do move over for drivers when it is clear, but I'm also all about helping them make good decision when it comes to my safety.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I am glad the rider sounds ok. I didn't quite understand how the wreck happened though. Sounds like a head on.  Did the Jeep turn in front of him?  I don't live up there, but work around there enough to know I would not ride on Shearers road and during lunch hour especially.

If I'm not mistaken thats the road Kyle Bush was ticketed doing 110+mph not long ago.

I still ride the road some, but am very picky about which roads and always consider how the time of day can affect traffic.

No 7:00 am hour, no 5:00 pm hour rides to avoid the late for work or just got out of work drivers. No routes near high schools when they let out and so on.

When I ride solo I ride like I am traffic.  I don't fear getting mowed down from behind as much as the right or left hook turning in front of me.

You guys are way braver than I am.  I'm thinking about a Crux in the near future.  Nice knowing I can drop off the edge of the shoulder should I need to. Tongue

I got hit by a car in May and was off the mountain bike for three months while recovering from a shoulder injury as a result.

Since I've gotten back on the road (and had to fight through tons of anxiety as a result), I've been riding farther into the lane, and most of the time I ride a little bit to the right of the mid-point of the lane, but almost never closer than 3 feet to the white line (or edge of road).  The amount of bad experiences I've had with cars has decreased dramatically and I feel all the better for it.  Lane positioning really is key.

That being said, I still ride withe a GoPro on my helmet 100% of the time commuting, and most of the time for the odd casual road ride.  I had it on when I got hit and the video saved my ass from a legal standpoint, and I don't want to risk anything like that again.

Did the same thing. Sold the road bike shortly after getting smacked by a sideview mirrior. All I have now is a 29er and a beach cruiser. Probably ride the cruiser more on greenways and railtrails Smiley

Actually, shouldn't we be encouraging more people to ride their bikes to reduce pollution? I know it's a little idealistic to think enough people would switch to riding to do enough to reverse this, but a more bike friendly culture would mitigate this.  Also, there is not much pollution out in the country where we ride.  Nothing but beautiful blue skies and the occasional car.

I think that's a fine idea.

Considering the distances and impediments to safe riding that exist on local roads as well as the speed in which this society operates, regardless of a bike friendly culture I think it's a stretch to think that most folks would seriously consider the bicycle as a means of transportation.

Yep, that's obviously a better option than riding in traffic.

But then again that's recreation. For most, not a serious consideration as a means of transportation to replace the automobile until gas hits $10 a gallon, a better road biking infrastructure is available, etc..

Unsafe. Period.  If you need to ride w/a GoPro running for legal reasons (for WHEN you get hit) says it all. Too many impatient, inconsiderate drivers.  Maybe when they invent flying cars (like The Jetson's!) and get the dummies off the roads... Tongue

It's not like being a on a bicycle is the only unsafe option on the road.  I've been hit by a car twice in the last 5 years and over 10,000 miles, but I've been involved in at least three times as many car accidents, from small ones that barely leave a scratch to ones that have totaled both cars involved, and none of it is deterring me from being on the road.  Growing up my Dad always taught me "it's not you that you have to worry about, it's everyone else" and that's true in both a car and on a bike.  Riding defensively is extremely important, lane positioning and riding predictably are both key points in riding safely.

Besides, the GoPro doubles as a way to help report aggressive drivers which you can do on the Charlotte Mecklenburg DOT site: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
