Yes, a group out in WNC has looked into it and decided to pass on being the organizers. They would rather be competitors.
And yes, there is a lot of interest with several of our local shops as well but there has not been a bid put forward from our area.
When I starting asking around about doing a kids only race series we put out a survey through several of our local shops. The survey showed a lot of interest in MTB racing among younger kids but really low interest from high school aged kids. (160 potential racers, only 8 high school aged kids) Now I'm sure there are many reasons why that was the response we got and once you get something rolling that is fun folks tend to discover it and join in.
So we concentrated on CYCL (
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) being a younger kids league to help build up a solid ridership to be ready whenever a high school league is formed.
So CYCL is looking forward to year three and we are looking at ways to get more kids out and racing but with an age cap of 14 we are very close to having kids age out. My own daughter will age out in three more seasons so I and a few other race parents are very keen on seeing what we can do to stand up a league in the near future.
My daughter races in all the NC youth leagues CYMBL (Brevard area), PYMBL (Greensboro ara) and CYCL (here). Each league seems to run around 35-48 kids a race and there aren't too many of us that travel for all three so youth racing here is still a regional thing but each region has an existing core of interest. Not sure what's going on out on the coast though.
That being said, to stand up a state-wide league is a big hairy deal and will need many hands to help. I'm up for making a high school league happen but this CAN NOT be a bike shop thing, they have businesses to run. It's got to be parents and enthusiasts like us to make it happen. Sorry, I'll get off the soapbox now.
If anyone has interest and is willing to commit to making this a reality then hit me up, let's get together, organize and get it rolling.
