High School MTB League inquiry

Was reading recently in Outdoor magazine about different states with High School mountain biking.

I would think with the avid NC mountain biking community that someone has applied for NC leagues.

Anyone know if NC has looked into HS mountain biking leagues through NICA?

I was curious as well. I read the same article plus one in Dirt Rag (issue 166). Would be interested in knowing if there is interest in the Charlotte Metro area.

Yes, a group out in WNC has looked into it and decided to pass on being the organizers. They would rather be competitors.

And yes, there is a lot of interest with several of our local shops as well but there has not been a bid put forward from our area.

When I starting asking around about doing a kids only race series we put out a survey through several of our local shops. The survey showed a lot of interest in MTB racing among younger kids but really low interest from high school aged kids. (160 potential racers, only 8 high school aged kids) Now I'm sure there are many reasons why that was the response we got and once you get something rolling that is fun folks tend to discover it and join in.

So we concentrated on CYCL ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) being a younger kids league to help build up a solid ridership to be ready whenever a high school league is formed.

So CYCL is looking forward to year three and we are looking at ways to get more kids out and racing but with an age cap of 14 we are very close to having kids age out. My own daughter will age out in three more seasons so I and a few other race parents are very keen on seeing what we can do to stand up a league in the near future.

My daughter races in all the NC youth leagues CYMBL (Brevard area), PYMBL (Greensboro ara) and CYCL (here). Each league seems to run around 35-48 kids a race and there aren't too many of us that travel for all three so youth racing here is still a regional thing but each region has an existing core of interest. Not sure what's going on out on the coast though.

That being said, to stand up a state-wide league is a big hairy deal and will need many hands to help. I'm up for making a high school league happen but this CAN NOT be a bike shop thing, they have businesses to run. It's got to be parents and enthusiasts like us to make it happen. Sorry, I'll get off the soapbox now.

If anyone has interest and is willing to commit to making this a reality then hit me up, let's get together, organize and get it rolling.

Awesome, check it out. Looks like there is a group working on a bid to start a league.
I've contacted them and offered to help.

North Carolina High School Mountain Biking's first event is coming. If you want to help us get High School MTB Racing to North Carolina, plan to attend this meeting.

We will be selecting a Board of Directors, and a potential coaching staff. This meeting will be a general meet & greet. So come represent!

Save the date: December 15th, 2PM at Back Alley Bikes in Carrboro, NC! (Group MTB ride will precede the meeting)

I'm going.

I will be out of town that weekend, but please keep me informed if there is anything I can do help/facilitate the process of a local team.

Hey Mike
We will be at the CX race in Hendersonville that weekend, but I want to be involved in this. Keep me posted.
I am pretty sure Kyle Z. wants in on this too.

Just a reminder that this Sunday NC NICA will be meeting in Carrboro to get this high school MTB race league rolling. If you want in and can make it, let's go.

If you want in and can't make it, that's cool, I understand. Give me a shout and maybe we locals can get together a little later. I'll fill everyone in on what happened and maybe we can get our area organized and ready to support this effort.

Both Mark and I will be there tomorrow. Doesn't look good as far as a ride goes, but the meeting should be good. See you there!😝

This past Sunday I attended the North Carolina High School Mountain Biking kick-off meeting. We had a small group of interested and passionate people from across the state coming together and talking about how we can create a NC National Interscholastic Cycling Association race league. We had a great turnout from our corner of the sate.

The goal is to submit a bid this year and hopefully be racing some time in 2015. I'm not intimate with the particulars but the short answer is that we need three things. Kids who want to race, people who are willing to put in effort to make this happen and the financial support to float this league.

We decided that the best approach is for us to think State-wide but act locally and communicate as much as we can. We also thought it might be best if we named a go-to person from each area that had representation to act as a regional coordinator to help keep each other in the loop and provide whatever support necessary. I volunteered to do that task for the greater Charlotte area.

So the first step is kids. You can't have a race league without teams of kids who want to race. The core goal is obviously High School based teams but independent teams are also an option. I think we have a fair amount of latitude with how these teams are arranged as long as we stick to some core guidelines. What are those guidelines? Honestly, I'm not completely sure but I'm working to educate myself on what NICA says and there is no reason we as North Carolina can't come together and make those guidelines ourselves.

Also to all our friends in South Carolina. I did some looking around and apparently there are NICA teams in states without leagues that compete in another another state with a league. I found out that there are NICA teams in Wyoming (a state without a state wide NICA league) that have competed in the Colorado NICA races. So as we work through this process I will absolutely be sure to have that question settled for you.

So to that point, in the coming weeks we will be holding team interest meetings to begin the process of forming cycling teams. So I'd ask that if you have an interest in making this happen think about what you want to do. I'll post up when we have more info.
