Goat Hill Approach

Curious on the entry you take to start up Goat Hill. I have always taken the route (which appears to be the one less traveled) across the culvert to the left and up. Really a brutal way to get started as I find myself banging my way throught the roots and rocks prior to getting onto what resembles single track before the left hand switch back. I realize there is a buffer entrance to the right, but I have always considered the culvert crossing the way it was initially intended to be ridden.

I have always just tried to carry speed down across the gas line and up the rocks/roots and make the right hand turn into the trail. More of a ride by braille approach and just hope for the best.

Was wondering if anyone had been able to climb that.
basically its the bottom of gas line.  I tried it on my geared biked a couple of times but could only make to where it turns up and to the right.
That's very impressive to those who can climb that.

"Beastly Hill Climb" = "Gasline" (open single track straight back up after Goat)? Other way around for me in terms of difficulty.

The gasline climb is actually the original trail before goat hill even existed. I remember riding it back in the mid to late 90's. Brutal climb.

Yeah, I can remember that climb.  I think I made it once or twice.  Very steep, washed out and lots of loose rock.

naw thats the upper easier part, the hard part of gasline starts at the bottom where goat hill starts just to the left.

Interesting. Going to have to take a look at that. all these years and never knew there was another option there. what is the approximate distance of that section that links to the bottom of gas climb?

sounds like the route would be to hit that first, down hill from top of gas climb/ goat then back up goat hill and back down the DH line in order to hit all of the trail in that section. (i am winded me just to type that out)

I thought it was up Goat (rocky rooty entrance) hard left at top to gas line DH then up fire road to rejoin Goat then down but fork left to the old rock garden then continue blue to rivers edge, weight, toilet, and so on.

Re-readind this, it does leave out the last decent of goat... Hmmm

yea mess around with it, there are several route you can figure out. Also at the normal entrance to the middle of power line, if you look straight across theres another downhill but right now the bottom is overgrown with weeds. Theres a lot of tough climbs in that goat hill area that most peps never even notice.

This section of WWC has always been confusing to me.  Not well marked in my opinion.

Always thought goat was the rocky rooty uphill.

should be better marked especially at the top of the climbs- I've probably descended the wrong direction at least once due to lack of appropriate signage up there.

I think this thread confirms the confusing nature of that segment.

The Goat Hill section with its switchbacks was added to make the trail more sustainable. You can tell by the roughness of the eroded bottom of gas line you cross to get to Goat.

I saw that climb to the left today when I was there. Never noticed it before, too busy trying to get going on goat. It does not look user friendly!

Over 10 years of riding out there and found this bit of joy today. The initial surge up isn't as bad as the new continued grind up the gas line after you clear the woods. Good times....

Sweet! I don't know why someone had to point this out for me to ride it, but I did the pre-cursor to the gas line climb today. It def made the gas line climb a whole lot less enjoyable. Also enjoyed that new section as well. WWC was a good ride this morning.

I usually skip goat hill because that climb looks like a disaster but yesterday I did every loop except the thread kuz that was closed...and yup, the goat climb was a nice walk.

I guess there's riders who can do it but I'll probably never be one.

Does anybody know the why or how long the thread section off of figure 8 will be closed ? I've only ridden that section a few times but it seems like a good way to add a few miles and burn some extra donuts off.  Hmmm donuts.
