Hammer unflavored drink mix

Anyone have any experience using this stuff? I am specifically interested in the unflavored version – not any of the flavored varieties. I don’t like sweet stuff and am intrigued by the prospect of a drink mix that isn’t sweet but when I am exerting hard I feel like I actually need sugar even though I don’t really want it. All the other sports drink stuff I have tried has been sweet and I have to force myself to drink it (and usually have to water it down). This stuff only has about 4 grams of sugar and I am just worried that it’s too low. Normally I avoid sugar so normally I would be thrilled to see something having low sugar but in this case it’s kind of concerning. I am currently using Accelerade which has about 20 grams of sugar. It seems to work well for me but again I have to make myself drink it. I only use it on very long rides when I feel like I have to have it.

Personally, i dont like ANY of Hammers powdered mixes. Theyre very chalky and just dont agree with me on taste or texture. I have had the unflavored mix that youre talking about, and i think it looks and tastes like baby formula.

The Hammer stuff is high quality.  The flavors are all naturally sweetened and not over-done.  I don't have experience with the unflavored versions, but I use HEED melon a lot for long races because of the mild taste.

I really like the Hammer stuff too for it's mildly sweet taste.  Heed is my favorite.  I tried the unflavored, however, and hated it.  I thought it would be good to have and potentially flavor it myself, but it tasted too much like cardboard.  If I still rode for long enough periods of time or racing, I would still be using Heed.  But these 1-3 hour casual rides don't really call for much more than water and a Hammergel.

Well I have never had baby formula so can't really say about that Smiley but I did try just a little bit of the hammer stuff and it did have a rather odd texture and slight flavor but seemed like something I could deal with. Maybe I will try one of the other flavors mentioned too and see what I think. Melon seems like maybe something that would be a mild flavor at least. It's just always tricky trying something new and then you get out there and realize oh crap this isn't working.  Undecided

If you like the taste of plain ol grits, it's good. When it gets warm, you get the sensation of sanding drywall. But you can always squeeze a couple of drops from a lemon to suit your taste

Sorry, no experience with Hammer.  As for unflavored, I put ice water in my CamelBak. One sheet of small bubble wrap on either side of bladdar...nothn' better than a cold drink on a hot sweaty day.  I use sport "beans & cubes" to get back what I burn.

I've raced for over 30 years and tried it all.  It all tastes like A**.

The key with the grittiness of Hammer products is to mix them with warm tap water first and shake vigorously.  Then put it in the fridge over night and do a quick shake before your ride.  If you don't, it will be gritty.  But the nice thing is their flavorings are very mild compared to most everyone else's.
