Anyone do an "Epic" all trails ride at LNSP?

One of my MTB goals for 2013 is trying to bang out all 30 miles of trails at LNSP in one shot. I'm figuring I would do Laurel and Wildlife first, maybe rest for a few minutes, have a cliff bar and stuff and then do Hawk/Hicks/Norwood and then Monbo. Does that sound like the order makes sense? I'd rather get the tough stuff out of the way first.

Also, for anyone that has done it, just curious on how long it took. My usual after work ride is H/H/N and Monbo and it usually takes me about 1.15. Of course I'd be pacing a bit slower for 30 miles so I was thinking maybe 4 1/2 hours or so.

Any tips or comments would be appreciated!

Yeah some friends and I did it about two weeks ago. We did the whole 30 and then did another partial so ended with close to 50 miles. I think it took us about 6 hours to do that but I wasn't timing it real close either. We were training for a race.

Took me about 4-4 1/2 hours. Then I napped.......a lot.

Wanted to add some further input here. When doing a long ride I always take way more than I actually need. I prefer to have more than I need than to get out there and realize too late that "oh I should have brought that" Smiley. The good thing about lake Norman is that because its loops you can come back to your car at various times and refuel or bailout if things aren't going well.

Also if you are wanting company for your endeavour I would be glad to join you. I ride alone a lot too though so if you are shooting for a solo quest I certainly understand that also. Just let me know.

I did this a month or so ago.  I did not time it, but I can vouch for the effectiveness of chocolate covered pretzels and a few pieces of string cheese getting me through the ride.  Start snacking early in the ride before you feel hungry.

I started with Laruel and its add-ons and finished with a slooowww Monbo.

I do this fairly frequently, every couple weeks or so.  I greatly prefer to do H/H/N, then Monbo, then Laurel/Wildlife.  That way I get good and warmed up and I can attack Laurel hard.  Also gives you that last little bit of Laurel from the fire road back to the parking lot to cool down.  I haven't done the whole enchilada with the loops going the other way (ie clockwise, even years trail direction), but I imagine it would probably be more fun for me to do Laurel/Wildlife then H/H/N and Monbo.

First time I did it took me about 3 hours 45 mins.  I'm down to about 2 hrs 40 min now.   Usually a 5 min or so break in the parking lot between the north trails and the south trails.

I think the last few times my wife and I did the whole 30ish miles at what I'd call a "pleasure cruise"  pace it was between 3.5-3.75 hours. Only stopping long enough to wolf down a pb&j or ham and speck sandwich. We usually do Laurel and Wildlife first to get the hard climb out of the way going in this year's direction.

I'd love to do this before the end of the year.  Is there an easy way to get to the car mid-ride for a refill of water/food/etc. (I doubt my 2L camelbak would last the whole thing!).

You will have to ride right by/through the parking lot at either mile 11 or mile 18, depending on which side you do first.  When it's hot as hell in the summer, I usually stop at the lot halfway through and refill water, change shirt/gloves/socks, and then hammer down for the rest of the ride.

I have never ridden the whole trail yet! I will as soon as we get the work crew set up. Hey Ridefour, You could ride the Laurel, Wildlife, Fox and Fallstown trails, then hit the parking lot to refill your hydration pack, then hit Hawk, Hick's Creek, Norwood Creek and Monbo.

I'm in the "do Laurel first" crowd. It seems like the easiest option.

If this is your first time riding 30 miles, be sure to stay fueled and hydrated. I sometimes eat a quick snack at about 10 miles and again at 18 miles (in the parking lot). If you don't use an endurance supplement, drink gatorade. Maybe just at the mile 18 refuel.

It is fun riding that distance, without repeating anything.

Good luck.

Guys, thanks for all the responses! I agree that the parking lot is perfectly situated for a refuel if needed.

I just did Laurel and all the Wildlife loops for the first time this past week and came in at just under 2hrs. What I was most happy with was that I did it non-stop, except for a dismount on that on brief super steep climb right after the stream crossing on Laurel. But I walked it up and kept going. When I was done, I felt good and could have done more, but the clock was ticking and I had to get home.

I will surely be giving the whole enchilada a run soon. Hoping to come in under 4hrs with a stretch goal of 3 1/2. Sooo, I'm straining to do EAutry's "pleasure pace". LOL! As for Drew K, you are a monster!

I do think some snacks are critical, but with the cooler weather, I think my 100oz Camelbak should be more than enough.

Catsruletn, thanks for the offer! I do have to say that on something like this, I probably want to be miserable on my own and not drag anyone down...at least the first time...after that, the more, the merrier!

Thanks again and I will keep you all posted...or just look for me on Strava.

hey

You have already done the hard stuff, the remaining 12 are not as hard.

Rode the Laurel side in 1:45 today and did the rest in 1:08.

I have done it on a Single Speed and a Geared bike.  Times were the same within a min, the SS just made it hurt more.

Decided to do the whole thing yesterday.  h/h/n/m/lau//wild/falls/fox.  I downed 2 trail bars before the laurel section but I still nearly rolled off the bike into a fetal napping position.  27.54mi in 3:37:50 not including many stops for weezing, etc.  I took a break at the end of wildlife on one of the benches, if I had gone to sleep I would have awoken hypothermic.

After doing the whole LKN chilada and 2 laps at RRT the last two weekends, I can say 2 laps at RRT is way tougher on this 50+ body.  Both fun,  Wilsons Creek coming up.  Should be ready.
