Front wheel "Click/Pop?"

So I have a 2013 full sus trek fuel ex 8. After a few months it started making a noise over  (in) the front wheel area when I'm riding, it's something between a click and a pop (cluck your tongue and you'll have some idea) that only happens when the bike is weighted, and when you hit a certain minimum speed. The noise is intermittent and I'm convinced it has something to do with the brakes.

Just took it in for a full braking and shifting adjustment - still does it.

Am I doomed to take it back to the shop? or is there an easy fix?

What type of brakes are you running? Its a strong possibility. I had some sneaky maguras that liked to randomly migrate if I wasnt on them a bunch. But due to the fact that its speed related i would be willing to rule that a lesser chance.

Everything from valvestem nuts to wheel reflectors should be checked (if you have em)

Also if you have any friends that like practical jokes- you should check any part of your bike that could harbor noise makers.. I always preferred cable ends in the stem or ball bearings in the bars for my victims.

Had kind of the same thing on my Klein years ago. Bontrager wheels. LBS said it was spoke tension. From what I remember that fixed it. Just a thought.

Also on duster and rhythm wheelsets there is a weld seam that has an insert in it. On some of the production runs of those particular rims weight and rotation can cause the rim to deflect enough to give you an intermittant popping sound while you are riding.

You need to strip the wheel to just the wheel itself (no rim strip or anything) If you find that you have the integrated rim strip you can just pry it out like regular.

Once you have the wheel by itself you need to hang the wheel by the weld seam area (on the opposite side of the rim from valve stem) from peice of 2x4 or other soft material like wood (that will fit between the spokes under the weld seam) in a shop vice.

Using a punch and hammer make two divots on both sides of weld seam about 5mm from the seam itself in the center of the rim.

This sounds silly but this procedure basically nails down that insert within the rim. Thus no more noise.
Cheesy

No reflectors. Vis a vis practical jokes - you're a sick man, Stoke. But you know a heck of a lot about bikes.

They are Bontrager wheels (Dusters). Here's hoping it's spoke tension and not what Stoke was describing (although, that will be an LBS process, not mine).

Its really a simple procedure. The service bulletin was issued fairly recently so a trek dealer should be able to help you no problem.

Picked it up from the LBS today - it's exactly what you said it would be and they fixed it. Thanks for the help (saved me some frustration when I can walk in and tell them exactly what the problem is).

A similar thing happens with my Stan's wheels.  There is an insert they use to back the welds.  They aren't structural, just aid in the welding.  On my bike, those inserts came loose and they float around making a click every time they come in contact with the rim.  I've used superglue to hold them in place and it has worked okay.  Sounds like this approach might work better.

I have no idea how to answer your question, but I am looking at this same bike. How do you like this? I am new to MTN bkg, will be at the WWC, BF, Pisgah trails- have you enjoyed the bike?
