Decided it was time for some new wheels for my Santa Cruz. Got brave and ordered the new rims from light bicycles (chinese carbon). These suckers are wide...33 mm wide & 30 mm deep. Was able to drop a tire size and essentially keep the same contact patch. Lost 2 full pounds out of my wheelset.Shout out to Mark at the cyclepath for the most excellent build! Much faster, but that is likely rims and tires. Huge difference cornering. Had to adjust my line into the berms. Stiff!! My trial run was hard to compare to my baseline because the leaves have come down like crazy since i turned the bike over to mark last sunday! The trail was a bit drifty.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Been thinking about those for a while for the hardtail...was considering some for the road bike as well but went with Pacentis... Well see if they show up in the budget for the carbon hardtail...

That shows how much the rims spread the profile of the tire. Those are actually 2.3 purgatorys that many reviews peg around 2.2 actual width...not on my rims!!!

Take another picture of the wheels from a front on viewpoint maybe.  Those tires just look incredibly huge!

What else did you do?  I know you mentioned going down a tire size but the rims you mentioned weigh in ~ 380 grams or .837lbs and run of the mill DT Swiss, say the EX 500 weigh in at ~500 grams or 1.1lb.   (1.1 x2 = 2.22)-(.837 x 2 = 1.67) = .55lbs

Couple things. The old tires were 840g each. New 580g and 675g. Spokes were also shorter and lighter. Tubeless kit was also much lighter, stans tape and ac valves vs old dt swiss rubber rim strip deal. All in all right at 2lbs.  Cheesy

So you saved almost twice as much in the non carbon tires vs. the rims.   Roll Eyes

That is the way it worked out. It was attributable to both the rims & the tires. I would not have gone down a tire size without the wider stiffer rims. The net net is that the wheelset is stiffer, more precise, and 2 pounds lighter! I'll take it!

I'm going to try out a pair for the 29er. They have a 35mm version coming down the pipeline. They are supposed to notify when they are available, sometime near the end of the month.

Looking at the pic of yours however, I might be able to go with the 30mm wide ones they have now.

They gave me specs on both. The current ones are 30mm external 23mm internal width. The ones they are coming out with have the hookless design and they are 35mm wide external 30mm internal. Weights are supposed to be 390g for the narrower ones and about 420g for the narrower ones. Decisions decisions!
