Survey says... 26/29 out(ish), 27.5 in

Quote

"there are two trends emerging that lead us to the shocking conclusion that 27.5 will eventually take the largest share of the MTB market. The first trend is Trail/AM riding is becoming the type of riding most mountain bikers want to do (61% currently). Part of this is thanks to the improvement in equipment (lighter bikes) and also the fact that more aggressive–but rideable– trails are popping up all over the country (thanks IMBA!).

The second trend is toward specialized (lowercase) mountain bikes for different riding styles. We don’t know if it’s a powerful marketing message or just basic math driving this, but more than half of mountain bikers (51%) agree that 27.5″ mountain bikes are best for Trail/AM riding."

Discuss...  Agree, Disagree?  What's your next bike?  Where do you see 27.5 v 26/29?

Agreed though to me the 26er is the heart and soul . I do see more and more shops carry more 29er's though. It is actually a tough call..I think for taller people it is a go to bike,l a mix between the two of either one you choose 26 or 29...Good read...

It's odd... the funny thing is that I got into MTB about a year ago and started out on a 29er (not knowing any better), it's just what was at the LBS!  No biggie, I rode it and it was confidence inspiring.... knowing nothing at the time, the video's I saw and what/how I saw myself (style I wanted/preferred) was more agressive xc/AM riding... but, the funny thing was I never saw many video's with big wheel bikes but it's what I started on so I rode it as aggressive as I thought/felt I could given my noob abilities.  I first got bit by the bug about 4-5 months after getting into MTB while riding Monbo at LKNSP when I decided to just forgo the brakes... from that point I was hooked and it was clear to me how I wanted to ride.

I rode my 29er for almost 7-8 months before getting my 26 full squish.  In that time though, the 29er felt nimble and I felt I could do what I wanted to do with it (note: was and am still a MTB noob) but to that point I felt comfy with how the bike maneuvered and it never gave me that sluggish feel cause that's what I knew/started with and got comfy with.  Fast forward to now after about 8 months on my 26er and yes, going back to the 29er and I now understand what the 26 guys alway say regarding big wheels.

The point of all this though was that at a point and time I didn't feel like the 29er handled any differently than the 26er.  Granted, I can probably attribute that to 2 things, 1) being a noob rider, and 2) That's just what I was used to.  In the end, I feel like the wheel size only mattered based on what I had gotten accustomed to.

Maybe it's just me, but I say this only because I see it evident on youtube/the interweb where the world showcases crazy insane skills of riders all different shapes and sizes and even kids on all different bike sizes doing some sick type of riding.  Most evident to me is when I see a young kid who probably had been on and should be on a 20-24 inch bike shredding on 26 wheels etc.  If we scale that up, I would imagine that is the equivalent of an adult riding a 29er.  Not to mention, I see riders that can kill it regardless what size bike they are on... In the end, we all win, bike tech continues to progress and we now have 3 tire sizes to choose from which I think is  awesome.  As with the majority of those surveyed, I've been bi 26/29er... and am 27.5 curious!   Wink

fully dig the read, seeing where you are comeing from I was there like three years ago. Being still noob myself I still question on the cornering. I like to take them low and tight on the inside, guesss that is why I hit trees when I ride by them, just tap them to let me know" hey man your pretty close. " I am going to a 29er for my commuter bike. I have a road bike but I ride it like I am on the trails so I have to switch the bike so I am going to learn to ride a 29er on the road and it is a single speed at that. Big challenge for me but hopeing it will help my riding out there on the trails. I have looked at the 650b's but It is a hands in there air and a shrug of " I am not to sure like the 29er's at first.. we shall see...That is all of my 2 cents worth , I could go on but wife is waiting...

I rode 26 until about 2010. Then started riding a 29er. Short adjustment period. Either rides fine to me. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. 650b has been around for a long time in Europe on commuter bikes.

Finally decided to read the article. Seriously, a poll based on 452 responses?  Not hardly a good pole.  As Dickey would say..."Meh".

Ride what you like. Smiley

The only trail around here where I feel awkward on a 29er is byt.   Sometimes high-speed slaloming at lnsp runs me into a few trees or off the trail but I'm not sure if that's slow cornering or just me being tired.  My favorite trail for the big wheels is reni, just seems like the 29er wheels float over the rooty sections.

I'm going to lighten up my tires to see if that helps with cornering.

I remember about 10-15 years ago, a lot of women in the bike club where buying Terry's. But they seem to have disappeared from the scene. Now I see bikes such as Trek's Cali. Women specific 29ers. So my guess is that they had to do something with all the 650b wheels. It's hype. But their will be interest in it for years. I'll wait till all the 26" FS come down in price. 15 years from now, they will be the new thing. But whatever feels good. Ride it
