The trail has been completely raked and leaves blown off...trees that were down removed.  It's a nice fast trail.  It'd be cool to see it lengthened someday.

Terrific - I've been tellin' myself to get over there to do that. That trail gets covered in leaves!

What shape is the trail in - can you tell if its been getting much use?

Thanks ETSX-70!!!

Your welcome! The trail is in great shape now that we cleared the fallen trees off and all the sticks and leaves.  It was obvious people weren't riding it much though.

One tree had fallen perfectly parallel to the trail so I made a skinny out of it.  Unfortunately my skills aren't good enough to ride it yet.  Roll Eyes

The trail really does have a nice flow...kudos to the original trail builders!

Brian M, a long standing THTB member, led that trail effort from layout through completion. Bob K did the machine work under contract - we had a grant from REI and the Trailblazers spent a considerable amout of general funds too.

There is room for some (not a lot) expansion, but there is great potential for one or more skills areas and there could be some very good jump lines (albeit short) built on the other side of the creek and one or more skilled optional lines along the trail. Lots of good cedar available. (Don't tell Mark...) It is a fun ride now but could be a great "gateway" community system. Just needs some love.

Great job with clearing the trail of leaves. First time riding the trail today. Though it's considered a "green", was still fun. Only a few obstacles, but fast in some sections. I was the only car in the parking lot, which made me a little uncomfortable as the trail is located not in the best neighborhood. I kept going back to the parking lot after each lap to make sure my car wasn't broken into. A good trail to show someone who wants to start mountain biking. Would recommend you check it out at least one time. I think the trail is around 2.5 miles.  Ended up doing 3 laps.

Yeah, I would be more comfortable with an alternative parking spot.  I don't guess any are really safe Angry though.

There are one or more security cameras on the lot - but don't know for certain they always are working or actually prevent breakins. I don't think we've heard of a breakin there, but we don't give that trail much use either. Like any traihead, keep possessions out of sight when parking a car.

If it were felt really necessary, we could likely get access from the college campus on the backside of the trail - would just take a short spur to get to the trail. That might open the trail to other, more frequent users as well.

A spur from the CPCC lot would be ideal.  There is much more traffic in that lot.

Here's another vote for the spur from the community college parking lot. I worked on the bridge with Brian when the trail was built and its a fun little trail. I travel a lot and would definitely hit this after flying home from time to time given its close proximity to the airport.

Actually that was Ben Blitch that did the work under contract.  bOB's ankle was still in a cast at that time.  I remember helping him deliver the mini-ex to the work site! Smiley

I haven't been to those location but we are looking for another Charlotte venue for the Charlotte Youth Mountain Bike League.

Thoughts?

Is there a good size parking lot?

Would this be a good place for kids to race?

Exactly where is this trail? Smiley I know it doesn't get much traffic because no one really knows about it. Could easily be ridden in combo with Reni

The entire trail is a lolipop layout with the handle, beginning at the parking lot, being 2 way. The intersection of the handle and the "pop" is a bit awkward for continuous loops - you need to do an awkward turn to start the next lap. However, an addition of a 30' "connector" would easily remedy that issue. I've always thought that should be done to make multiple laps easier. Depending on your distance for a race,  you could start kids out right after the bridge near the entrance where it's double track, and then they could sort out and separate a bit for approx. 1/4 mile before they hit the singletrack. I think it would be a great track for kids - if its long enough. Not a lot of elevation, very good flow and a pretty piece of woods. Also, having kids race there would be a good way to re-intoduce the trail to locals and local kids who the trail was built for. (The Divas initially had planned to donate several of their Project Angel bikes to the center so local kids could check them out and ride the trail. That fell through either cause of storage space, or overall logistics of maintaining a share a bike program with ongoing sign-outs/ ins for the bikes, etc...)

Parking should be adequate unless there is a big function at the community center. Then it might get a bit tight with a race. Never seen the lot near full.

Mark, I'm pretty sure bOb cut all that trail - I helped track his progress and hours. Ben did the pump track and mini trail in the Lakewood neighborhood. (Funny, I ran into Ben in Park City. He and his girl, now wife, living one valley over and he's still trail building. He's also drinking good wiskey ...  Shocked)

It was almost all machine built so its pretty smooth. A few spots have some smaller sized rock rubble stuff and there must be a few larger roots the machine didn't get, but should be fine for cx. Bob built it right so should not be any erosion or other age/wear damage.
