Just want to make everyone aware that the local snake population is taking advantage of the recent warm-up.  If you're riding in the middle of the afternoon, keep your eyes open for them.  I rode Sherman's yesterday at around 2 PM and caught a few out working on their tans, including a 3 - 4 foot copperhead on the Lake Loop.  Fortunately, he saw me before I'd seen him and he slithered off the trail before I passed.  I credit that one for inspiring me to pedal faster the rest of the way!  Smiley

I saw two copperheads directly on the trail last time I rode Sherman on a sunny but cool afternoon a couple weeks ago in two different points. Never have seen venomous snakes like that on single track, and two in one day really creeped me out.

Not sure if the population density of copperheads is high in that area, or its just that the trail weaves back and forth over such a small area that it is inevitable they will be on the trail at some point... Probably a bit of both, but it definitely tempers my enthusiasm to ride there. Add in copious leaves that make them hard to spot until it is too late, even if you are riding slowly... Never mind how it makes you wonder how many you probably rode right past without seeing.  Shocked

Makes riding on the road seem safer in an irrational kind of way.

I would much rather deal with the copperheads in the woods than some granny driving a vintage Cadillac on the road......  Snake envenomation can be fixed, a ruptured aorta however......

I think I may have seen it posted here that if you are in the woods in western NC, you are within 30 yards of a copperhead.

I used to ride; now I just drink and cry about not riding.
