Bar/stem question

Print Post
I'm looking at bar/stem setups and I have a question that's probably common sense: what would be the difference between switching to a flat bar, or taking one spacer out from under the stem and using a regular riser bar? Aren't both effectively lowering your position? Aren't the sweep available in the same dimensions, the flat bar just has no rise?

I guess I'm basically asking if you would take out any spacers before opting for a flat bar? Or is the flat bar mainly for racer bois that already have the stem slammed?

If you ride clipped in on a carbon hardtail you use a flat bar, dems the rulz... don't mess with it. It has nothing to do with raising or lowering the riding position.

No doubt.  You got a lot of helpful replies.  Go ahead and drop the stem.  The advantage of the flat bar is to get lower than your stem combo will go.

I run flat bars on all my bikes.  The 2 reasons are to get the bars lower (on my niner I have got the stem flipped upside down and a flat bar on it) and because I have found a bar with the sweep, length and rise I like that happens to be flat.

thanks for all the replies, helpful or not  Grin Ive got a spacer under the stem ill drop first and see how it goes.

Ive just always ridden a riser bar, and i occasionally get hotspots on the outter edges of my palms and ive read that flat bars seemed to help some people lessen that and put the wrists in a more comfortable position. But i guess technically that could be solved with a different sweep/rise bar?
