I don't think the narrow/wide concept is part of the patent, from my understanding that was done many decades ago.  The patent is probably the tooth profile itself, which could be easily modified.  Hell, all the third parties doing it now all have different tooth profiles already, even if the differences are slight.

If they wanted to patent the chain rings/tooth design, they should have slapped a patent pending on it and filed the papers when they were first released/designed.  It seems like an unfair business practice to release a product, wait for it to be adapted by others and then fish for a fee.

If the patent is for the tooth design, I see no problem, if it is for the narrow/wide concept, that has already been used by too many others to stuff that cat back in the bag.
