wheel help

i picked up a Raleigh RX 2.0 last summerish, and have been using it as a commuter/training bike/gravel bike and been having a good time with it overall. Im planning on putting road tires on it in the future but still running cross tires for now, but the stock wheels are heavy as lead. Ive looked around the interwebz and cant nail down a weight, but im sure theyre in the neighborhood of 2000grams. I cant swap them out with any of my other wheelsets because theyre disc, so therein lies the problem.

I thought about having a carbon disc set built up locally since ill be riding it a good bit on the road too, but probably wont drop that much $ on them. I looked at the IronCross wheels and the weights look good, but at 200lbs im over the limit for the lighter sets(~1500g). The IronCross' would also rule out running road tires probably because of the width, but i could always run file treads on it i guess.

EDIT: just saw the Alpha 340 disc wheels, didnt realize they started making them in disc. 1620g at a 200lb weight limit isnt too bad, and it would let me run road tires too.

So what would you guys recommend?

I would just build up some wheels with wider rims that would allow you run tubeless. At 23 mm wide you can also run road tires on them if you want. I think I can build a set of disk wheels that will weigh below 1700 grams and still be robust enough for cross , gravel grinds, even some light trail riding. Feel free to give me a call if want  to discus the details

The other problem with the Iron Cross that I ran in to is they will only recommend a max pressure W/tube of about 50-60 psi. Less if running tubeless.  Where you thinking of lacing something up to your existing hubs or going completely new?  You could get that weight with an aluminum rim but you can get lighter and stronger with a carbon rim.  +1 on Enoch's recommendation for rim width.  I just built a set of I-9 Torch hubs to 30mm wide carbon rims/ with a standard double butted spoke and alloy nipples that tipped the scales at 1600 grams w/rim tape and valve stem.  Seems a narrower rim would be lighter depending on the hubs used.

I can help you as well if you can't get up with Enoch.

thanks guys, i was hoping to hear from you two. Ideally i would like a carbon rim but not sure i can/want to spend that much. I would probably get a whole wheelset built instead of using my current hubs just so i would have a spare set of wheels if i needed them in a pinch or something.

Both of you feel free to PM me a rough price on an aluminum set if you dont mind. This wont be something ill be doing for a couple months or more, just doing some research right now and seeing what the damage will be.

I'm 170lbs with all of my crap on, and haven't trashed a wheel since the ole Spinergy Rev X days.  That being said, I'm 2 for 2 for carbon rims for cyclocross the past 2 seasons.  A pair of American Classics cracked last year, and a pair of Easton EC90 SL's delaminated after 2 days of racing in foot deep Hendersonville mud.

I rebuilt the AC hubs with Stan's Alpha 400's- went with the heavier Alphas since they're 18/24.  Tubeless, with tires, they're lighter than my Ksyrium SL's.  No issues, other than a bad Maxxis road tubeless bead that blew out.  I've been running the Vittoria tubeless cross tires on them.

Unless you ride in perfect conditions I'd stay away from carbon.  If you're ever at a race check out what the guys from I9 run...not carbon.

I had a set of Alpha 340 32 holes that were the flimsiest rims I have ever ridden (185 lbs). I've built up a handful of sets of the Velocity A23 rims and I've been really impressed by the strength/stiffness to weight ratio. Get a decent set of road hubs, and some double butted spokes and you'll have a fairly light wheelset that will take a beating. You can also run the A23s tubeless with tape and a valve.

I think you guys missed the "DISK" part which kinda changes things just a little.

Sure did. They make non-machined sidewall A23s that would be killer laced up to a set of lightweight DT mtn hubs or something similar. And there's nothing wrong with running a 25-28c road tire on a 23mm rim.
