Stripping down my road bike tonight so I can replace the drivetrain.  Bike is a 2006 model, bought as new old-stock in 2009.  Survived three New England winters (and saw plenty of road salt as a result) and has seen a hair over 10,700 miles.

Got everything off tonight, went to adjust the barrel adjusters on the downtube, and SNAP goes the first one.  They were seized and unbelievably corroded.  Tried to be more gentle on the second, and that one snapped as well.

Being too stubborn to go hunting for replacement parts tomorrow (and besides, the tabs were stuck on the frame as well due to either paint buildup or stripped hex heads), I decided to just drill them out.  Found two barrel adjusters in my box of BMX bits and pieces, drilled out the tabs just big enough to fit them, and screwed them down.

Yes, I know they aren't adjustable, but I don't think I ever once adjusted tension at that point before, and they're tightened down enough where they won't rattle.

We'll see how the install goes tomorrow.

If I put the nut on the other end I could make it adjustable, would just need to squirting something inside the drilled out tab to keep it from rattling.
