1x11 gearing

So I have a few rides on the new XO1 drivetrain on my Solo (650B) and I feel like the stock gearing w/ a 34 tooth ring is fine for all the local trails. I would like another gear or two on goat hill, but everything is doable. I'm thinking I will need lower gearing in the mountains but also feel like I will spin out on the fireroads/ return roads if I go to low. I was thinking of going w/ a 30t in front, but may go w/ a 32t for the roads. Anyone else using this config and what gearing are you using?

Thanks!
Ryan

I'm using a 32 in the front.  That's a 32x10 high gear which I never use. Heck, I don't use the 3 highest gear and could easily get away with a 30T. Smiley

FWIW, I run a 1x10 on the bike I ride out at Pisgah, with 30t on the front and 11-36 on the back.  26" wheels with a 2.25" tire out back.  I use every gear, and if anything, I would go to a 32t front.  I spin out on the fast bits a lot more often than I run out of gear on climby bits.  And getting off and hikeabiking the really steep stuff is a lot easier than trying to spin a 110 cadence while you're bashing down a hill.  Maybe if I went to 1x11 with 10-42, that would be the best of both worlds… but that's a freehub body, a cassette, a derailleur, and a shifter… big $.

For reference, right now I run 32x18 on the 29" single speed everywhere here, might go to 32x17 for LNSP now that it's the other direction.

Just for additional products knowledge.

I was jealous of the 1 x 11  range and desired that low low climbing gear for the mtns.

Wide range your 1X10 setup with a 42Tooth climber gear add on!

Just ordered one of these myself. Looks like late february before they are shipped though.

I'm running a 30t N/W ring in the front and can get by with the 36 cog in the back but I like to be able to rest a little on some long grueling climbs. That's really the only reason i'm buying the 42t cog. it will help me on my longer rides in the mtns.

Wolf Tooth Components have their own 42t cog coming out in February as well - USA made and I think even cheaper than the OneUP.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am going to try the 30t and will likely get a 32t as well. I can always bring another ring for my pack and swap on the trail.

Just keep in mind the 30t will have different length chainring bolts.

Really?  I thought the difference was that the bolts thread into the ring on the 30T but are the same length?

Good to know.

So the 32 uses the same bolts as a 3X setup?

You are correct about that, 'ne. Just got a 30t and 34t RF NW rings in today. will have the 32 next week.

I should have been more specific, as I meant my comment to be directed towards the option of switching between 30t and 32t on the trail.

30t uses the threaded half of the bolts from a triple (i.e. if you have two chainrings sharing the same bolt setup).

However, if you're coming from a 2x setup or simply switching from a different 1x ring, the 30t will need a longer threaded bolt than you'd be using as part of the bolt set for a single chainring of another size.  While you could probably get away with the shorter threaded bolts, it won't be grabbing nearly as much of the chainring threads and you'd increase the risk of stripping them out.
