But those facts just get in the way, don't they?  ;)[/quote]
Really those facts don't mean jack.
My wife is a teacher and has been doing it long enough to see the kids pass from her class, go to high school, graduate college and start their own families and now their kids are in her class. Over the years she has seen the most important factor is home life. Are the parents involved and raising the kids or are the kids raising the parents? Too many parents think raising kids is sending them to school, making sure they have the latest electronic what-ever, going to soccer/dance/etc. practice and that as long as they score well on a test all is great. The sad reality is too many go to the so-called best schools, live in the best neighborhoods and are not prepared for life on their own.

Here is my take on education as a parent
I believe you must be involved and know what your kids are doing in school.

Hey man, we had our conversation on this so you know where I stand on it. However, if its trail info you want, I can provide that. Obviously Ellicotville is great. It will be about 40-45 minutes from OP. Really close to OP is Sprague Brook, that would be the place you will hit most often. Its only about 15 minutes from OP. Last I heard maybe a 10-12 mile loop. Very rooty. Its become the go-to place for most of my friends for a weekday ride in the area because its so much closer than E-villle

Hunters is old school there, thats where I learned to mtb. Fun trails, but pretty short, maybe 20-25 minutes from OP. Watch the cliffs down to the creek!!! They are buidling new trail at Harris Hill. There is also Letchworth State Park and some excellent riding in the Finger Lakes as well as near Rochester. Thats about 1-1.5 hours away. And just over the border in Canada there are some decent trails. Heard they are building more at Alleghany, right now its really just wide double track, nothing really good at all. The park is about 25 minutes south of Eville. Near Eville is Golden Hills. Its a good trail, very worth checking out. Check out: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

There is a big difference in when you can ride up there. They are still buried under 2 feet of snow. Learn to snowshoe, xc ski, dh ski, or get a fat bike. It will make the winter a lot more fun. I did a lot of xc skiing and snow shoeing.

I lived there for 14 years and have a lot of good friends up there. Its a good place, gets a bad rap.

Good luck with the move!

I hear ya man but the wheels are rollin'. Already advised the wife I will be getting a fatbike. Not sure if the shoeing or x country skiing will fit my style Wink. From a logistical perspective or otherwise which would you suggest: OP or East Aurora (looking at the village). East aurora looks a lot like Davidson to me and looks to have some cool stuff within walking distance. Nice looking coffee shop and a sweet craft brew store/bar (Aurora Brew Works) plus it looks like it's just a skip up the road to Hunter's creek. Looking like late June so at least I'll be able to get a full riding season in this year. Sorry if I've derailed the thread or turned it down on the upside if you will.

I'd go East Aurora. I just prefer it to OP. Most of the bike shops double as ski/winter shops so just for a couple of recommendations: Sliders in Colden (close to where you are thinking of living, right down the road from Sprague Brook). The owner Greg is a great guy. Campus Wheelworks in the city. This place has been around for years and for good reason. Ellicottville Bike Shop. Finally, my really good friend Scott owns BlueLine Biccyles, and can get you pretty much anything bike related. He is also part of the group that promotes the races up there. He is not a store, just runs the shop from his house, but hes really good.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Winter riding here is hit and miss.  Mostly miss.  It doesn't usually stay cold enough to freeze throughout the day and become muddy messes.  Since we have clay soil and not rocky soil, most are closed when muddy.  That means winter riding is tough.  I usually move to the road in the winter. On days when you can ride in the winter good shoe covers would work, but those shoes look awesome.

They are awesome, very warm and can ride in 20 below with no problem. I guess I'll keep them and try. Also I want to know if anyone rides during the night? Here we shred trails at night because lots if guys have kids and to rip during the day is hard. I love night riding and wondering if anyone feels the same? I'm pumped and I'll be there first week of May!!!!

Night riding is allowed at a few trails. Enough good ones to get your fix.

Ok so far I've ridden Sherman branch and Beatty. I loved both of them. Different than NY and fun! I love the red clay! And the berms ...maintained great! Thanks for the info and I've been having a blast. My car brick down so I had to ride from Matthews to Beatty but it was amazing out today.
