CMUD Hookup?

Anyone have a hookup with Char Mec utilities?  Have a fire hydrant open full bore in the hood for the last several hours and can't get a response.  Seems CMUD trumps the fire dept who will get a hand slap if they come close it.

Lots of water being wasted.  Angry

Tell them it's eroding/compromising the road.  That always works.

CMUD does not respond fast to leaks unless it's a very very big one; otherwise it will take them a day or two in my experience and even then they may not fix it for a long time.

Fire hydrant full bore is a big leak.

you could try using some large channel-lock pliers and turning the valve screw on the top to shut it off......

If you really want to shut it off yourself, a pipe wrench will do the trick.  If was me I wouldn't touch it as it might be on for a reason.  If you do decide to turn it off, be sure it is either on or off, not half way.  A fire hydrant has weep holes at the bottom to let the water drain out so it doesn't freeze and shoot water out when someone runs over it.  If a hydrant is left partially on then the water runs out of the weep holes in the bottom.  You are supposed to throttle the hydrant with the valve in front.

Just give it a big bear hug and see if that stops the water flow.  Roll Eyes

Sound advice!
You have reported it. It is on C-Meck to turn it off. There are several scenarios. Most likely flushing the line from some repair up stream.

If it's still running call the news... they'll get it fixed.

Yep, very familiar with that process as we've had multiple water main breaks in the neighborhood over the years.  Was told the hydrant may have been turned on to help clear out storm drains from the recent heavy rains.  Who knows.

Good news is it's off now.
