Rode everything today. Nice job, trail gnomes! Every trail is well marked (still hate Goat Hill) and well maintained.

i got in a ride at USNWC this morning, and was very pleased to see all of the new work that has been going on over the last year.  i have not been since this time last year and with the funky wet season we had, never got to ride these new additions and improvements.  wedge trail is a cool little addition.  new N-S connector to start is fun, and all of the cool things like weight station exit, toilet bowl entrance/exit reroutes, top of Point, and the rejoin toward the lower docks on S. Main, and all of the berms... that hardpack clay makes awesome berms.  sprinkle on some fresh pine needle cover and you got a fast track.  even the powerline DH/jumplines have seen some major attention.

CLC/Threadtrail had closed trail status, more trail/loop goings on?

even the permanent "mud run"-type obstacle course features every so often and the (assumed) signage for 5k/10k routes, they're showing the place lots of love.

keep up the great work [thumbs up]

Yeah, the trail really is turning out great.  Couple questions about way to ride the trails now.

I typically start at parking lot, ride down make a right onto north main, ride that out to the actual WWC and around to the entrance of the trails.  Is that still the preferred method?

Is the "slalom" course people keep talking about the kind of rough jump line that is to the left, after you exit the main trails and before you get to lake loop or am I missing something else somewhere?  I saw someone say there is a cool line at the top of wedge trail?

From an earlier post in this thread, I think at the middle of wedge you pop up to a left and it's in the open area for the gas line utility right of way. I saw some folks pointing and checking out the area yesterday, but did not go look myself.

Also curious about hitting all loops without too much backtrack or overlap how top of goat hill to old DH lines would work (even the lower goat hill descent that crossed fireroad to rocks and double jumps at bottom)

I have been hitting the 'east main' first. Starting from old trail head at power station in back of parking lot and go left down hill. Then I ride the rest of the trail as usual hitting lake loop last if I want to ride it all. Only double back is the climb back up the gravel downhill you started on entering east main in order to get to the north main entrance.

The thread trail is really the only two way section of trail. Talk about backtracking and head on collision potential. Personally, I am not missing it. Plenty of mileage out there without the optional out and back for me.

Anybody have an old trail map of "Catawba" from the mid/late 90's prior to the WWC being built?  Would be interesting to see how the trail has changed.

Rode all of the new stuff tonight.  Liked wedge trail, disappointed that certain parts of the north trail were removed.

The bottom line is that the improvements don't really matter when the trails are always closed. One of the many reasons not to buy a $40 parking pass this year.

Just rode Renni - besides a puddle on the connector trail (which is always the last to dry), the trails were dry and ready to go.

Was wondering how long it would take for the negativity to effect a positive thread. I am impressed it lasted 30+ days.

Interesting to point out the use of an unrelated thread to inquire/ challenge the trail status vs. sending a PM or creating a new thread to the Trail Coordinator.

I guess when you have one of the most popular and best overall trails in the area (IMHO), you can afford to be a little more selective on how you c (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)are for it. Well worth my $40 parking pass and appreciate the extra care for the trail.

When you say middle of the wedge trail are you talking at the very top (half way through) or at the "access road" crossing about halfway through the first half of that trail (quarter way through)?

Either way I am assuming you exit left, ride down the power line right of way and the re enter the wedge trail somewhere.

Also, I rode the extra loop at the top of goat for the first time yesterday.  Awesome ride down but the ride up is still brutal.  I'm not sure what that is called but I have a new nickname for it.   Smiley

I wouldnt say it is the best trail system, I am partial to RRT right now, but it is an awesome place to ride.  I went out there Saturday and rode the whole thing, then my wife and 17month old showed up and we had lunch together and enjoyed just hanging out.

With that being said the WWC COULD do a better job of PROACTIVELY managing their trail status.  I mean come on how hard is it to make a prediction on wether or not the trail system will be open "tomorrow [insert date]" given the past/future weather conditions.  As it stands right now you have to wait until ~10am for them to update the call in # or webpage.  Either that or roll the dice and head over there and hope they are open.

That is what I did on Saturday.  Right at the top of the Wedge trail there is a bit of a cut through to the left, and the DS course is easily accessed there.  It dumps you out onto the main trail just before the Wedge trail starts.

That left you take at the top of Goat is an older DH course, I took it Saturday as well and the climb up the gas line does suck, but at least you get the old start gate descending the other side.  Cool

My .02. I got the chance to ride the WWC this weekend while I was in town and it was my first time riding there in almost a year. The new fixes/reroutes/additions are all a welcomed change. The connector between North/South that now has all the berms in it is a lot more fun than just running that old access road underneath the ropes courses. The Wedge trail is a nice addition to a rather boring section of the system running between Carpet and Goat. The left hander off the fire road and up the gasline just before the old entrance to Toilet Bowl began holding water for a long time and had gotten rutted out since everything seemed to drain down into that corner, so ducking into the woods a little earlier is a welcomed change. Keep up the good work Lee and crew.

I had to reset my id on this website for some reason but I've been posting occasionally for years.  The thing that the WWC may want to consider, but hasn't and probably won't, is that we have pretty much eliminated the trail from our riding selection because we have come so many times to find out the trail was closed......
......but open just after we left and went somewhere else to ride.  4 times in 2 years.  On top of that some years ago we were riding and we could hear someone yelling "The trail is closed" in the distance by a guy on a bike riding so we made the one hour drive back home only to read online where others had ridden the trail that day.

Seems to me it would be really easy on most days to make the decision as to whether the trail was open or close the day before instead of the morning of.  I'd love to see this:
"If there is not more rail tonight the trail is open tomorrow morning at X time."

Are you checking the status before you go or is it closing on the way.  I always check if I think there is a chance of rain.  I get texts from twitter on my phone when it opens and closes also.  Not sure how fast they hit it.  A lot of trails close during mid day if a storm comes through.

I only ride there a couple of times a year because of how far of a drive it is for me but I do like the trails and the other amenities.  I think it is one of the better trail systems in the area.  The maintenance seams to be really good and I like the new trails added lately.  It seems to me that they have been managing the open and closed status on par with the rest of the trails lately.  I do have a issue of having to pay to park to use public land.

Hey Lee,
What gives with the Green trail.  Closed for the past two days. Any Idea how long the closure will last?
