Hey folks,

Fixing to install a new fork and need to swap my crown race. Any tips on removing and re-installing the crown race without damaging it?

Thanks

I did this 2 nights ago to my cane creek race, used a broad tipped flat-head screwdriver, and slowly worked it around the whole race. Push it between the race and fork crown and gently twist, took me about 5 minutes and both pieces looked fine afterwards.

To get the crown race off, I use razor blades.  Start by putting one between the fork and the race and then start hammering 1 or 2 more between the first one and the race.  It doesn't mar up the fork crown.

I use a piece of pipe to knock the race back down on the new fork.

Find someone with a pegboard full of tools.

Give him a six-pack.

Stand back.

They don't let us backwoods Union Co. folk north of Rea Rd. without written permission. I think they're worried we might assimilate into the greater Charlotte population...that or they're worried we might eat all ya'lls Bojangles biscuits...

I'll take it to Ultimate. I dont trust myself with screwdrivers and razor blades. Gotta pick up some 29'er toobs for my new bike anyways...

Never trust a Bojangles in a nice part of town.  They don't butter the biscuits right.

Avid brake caliper spacers (red hard plastic) work pretty well for starting a gap.  Is super easy and reduces the chance of damage compared to a screwdriver.  As stated earlier, a sturdy PVC pipe will get it back on with ease.

Either buy the right tool or I have used wood chisels for years.  Tap it lightly with the flat side on the bottom & the ramp on the top & move slowly around the crown until it loosens up.  I've never had an issue doing it this way.

Use a wooden shim to hammer those things off.  Split a small shim off of a 2x4 and have at it.  Will not damage anything.
