Snake alert.

My coworker friends' dog was bitten by a copperhead last week at Ann Springs. I think he said the mill pond trail. He didn't see the bite but he actually heard it, turned around and saw the snake.  It was about two feet long and pretty aggressive because it stood it's ground and didn't move away.

He and the dog were able to walk back the way they had come from. He took the dog to the vet and it had a hugely swollen nose but was ok after a few days.

Almost stepped on one late last week trail running at riverwalk.  I have seen a few out there before.
Glad the dog is doing ok.

Copperheads don't back down.  It's not in their nature.  Glad your dog is OK!!!

First let me say I'm glad that the dog is okay. But I'll have to disagree on the aggressive nature of the copperhead. They are known to be very docile (cottonmouth is a whole Nother ball game). I was a field biologist for a living in another life and have had run-ins with both.  Bugs the crap out of me when people kill them (copperheads)for no reason. When you're in the woods you're in their house. On multiple occasions I've been out riding and had someone in my party run over one including last weekend at the Whitewater Center, picked it up and moved it off the trail three different times it never even struck at the stick.

Have a friend in the neighborhood whose dog is notorious for getting into dens of the d@#n things and taking multiple bites to the face. Usually, his head is swollen up like a balloon (read: twice the normal size, and he's a big dog to begin with).

Usually goes down on its own after a few days.

Glad everyone involved is all right.

Second the live and let live mentality - you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. Now, if they go out of their way to kill you, by all means take them out. Won't happen though.

I have never come across a copperhead while riding.  I do occasionally see a black racer and/or rat snake.  I passed one tonight at the whitewater center as it crossed the trail while headed from a grassy clearing into the trees.  I saw him up ahead and said something "what's up buddy" as I passed.  I always say we leave all the other creatures be and share this big spinning rock.

I have seen a couple of copperheads on local trails.....don't matter which one, the fact is that they can be expected to be everywhere in this area.  I did kill them.....most bike trails are walked by kids, families etc. They are difficult to see and can be stepped on. If I saw one in the woods, in general, I would leave them alone.  Copperheads are not long like other snakes, they have a thick mid body.  They are not aggressive at all but will not retreat.......it's their home and they know it. But if they perceive aggression....watch out.
Could have been a worse ending if the snake had bitten the dog on a fleshy part of his body where he could inject a lot of venom.

It seems like a faulty assumption to me that if you find a snake on or crossing a trail that they are going to be there when a kid comes along.  If you saw it's den, maybe I could sympathize, but animals move.  A copperhead alone in the woods is the same as a copperhead that's crossing a trail.  It's just coincidence that you happened to cross it's path.  Killing one copperhead or a couple is not going to reduce the chance that another will be crossing a trail when a kid comes along.  So what's the point.  If anything, I think you put yourself at risk.

Oops that was me….I felt really bad but I am pretty sure he was ok. At least he didn’t seem hurt. I only ran over the very end of his tail. Or body, or whatever it is on a snake. I guess they don’t really have tails. Their whole body is a tail….or something. It’s kind of confusing.  Undecided

There are several copperheads that hang out on the trials.
1 as was noted on the Mill Pond trail, a rather fat one that hangs out near the new pallet bridge and one that spends time around the rocks on the School loop east trail.
There is also a real big black snake that is frequently seen on the Sugar island loop, hopefully keeping the copperheads in check.

Ran over my first snake last night at Renni during the race.  Black and yellow.  I managed to get the front wheel over him but the back wheel got him.  I don't like snakes, no way I  would stop to check on him or even get close enough to him with a stick to get him off the trail but I do feel bad about hitting him.

That was an eastern King snake.

They eat Copperheads, and are virtually harmless to you.

Next time, stop, get off your bike and offer to buy him a cup of coffee. Then gently shoo him off the trail.

So, a few years back this dude was exiting Springs mumbling about snakes everywhere.  I figured he was trippy and talking about roots.  I've never seen a snake there in 20 years.  But again I'm legally blind. Cool

The bite is normally not fatal to the dog. One of our dogs has been bitten twice in my back yard. This spring I noticed the same dog paying a lot of attention to something and, sure enough, she was messing with a copperhead. They are not aggressive from my experience. Have them around the house a lot and have never had one ever go into strike mode. I either shoo it away with a broom or pick it up with a shovel and move it to a better place. People are to quick to want to kill snakes because they are so uncomfortable around them. Last year I removed a lethargic rattle snake from the trail at Uwharrie.
