Specialized lifetime warranty is a joke.

Print Post
I'm extremely upset with the Specialized warranty department. I purchased a set of Carbon Roval Mountain bike rims from a bike shop of theirs last February and had the front rim fail on me last month. After sitting on my rims for 2 weeks they deny my claim by saying it was from a heat source from being to close to a car muffler. My bike is only stored in a garage and it is never placed near a car muffler or any other heat source not even when its on a bike rack. The deformation in the carbon came from the freaking nipple and spoke ripping out of the wheel. So much for lifetime warranty... 360 bucks for a new rim that I'm not paying.

I purchased them specifically because they had a lifetime warranty.

lol yeah right.  I will buy Chinese carbon before i buy another specialized wheelset.  Cheaper and they have not failed on me.

360 dollars is the crash replacement cost for one rim Sad

Light-bicycle warrantied my chinese carbon rim (same issue: carbon pulling up around 2 - 3 spoke nipples). After several persistent email attempts before receiving a reply  and the submittal of digital pictures of the condition and a digital picture of the manufacturer information on the ID surface of the rim, LB agreed to ship a new rim.  I did have to pay for shipment (approximately $48) from China.  The failed rim (420 gram, wider 29") was installed on my rear wheel.

Knock on carbon, no issues with the replacement rim thus far, or with the original front rim.

Just ordered a replacement from them.  30mm hookless carbon rim for $165.00 Smiley  saved over 50%

I'm curious as to how the bike shop you bought it from interacted with Specialized.  That relationship is many times critical in success with warranty claims.  I know how your bike sits on the back of your car and it's not even close to the exhaust that I remember.  I would be interested in seeing the wheelset if/when they ship it back to you.

Call me.

I know mark plus I always put the front wheel on the drivers side.  I'm going to speak with the manger of the shop tomorrow and show him how my bike sits on the rack.

Mark is usually wrong but this is very right. I did warranty stuff for one of the largest Specialized dealers in the country and it was really up to ME whether to deny or accept the claim- at least in terms of me knowing how to communicate to specialized what was going on. Im not working for a speshy dealer anymore. Go see Mark.

Reply from Specialized

"We are sorry to hear about your wheel. I am not familiar with your specific claim, but our lifetime warranty does not cover regular maintenance, such as: truing or tensioning, wear and tear, or damage due to accident, abuse, or neglect. Please contact your Specialized dealer to discuss a discount on a new rim or wheel. We hope you can get back on your bike soon. Kind Regards"

Whats to stop them from classifying everything as normal wear and tear?? Why even have a warranty at all..

I never had to put up with this crap from Santa Cruz

That was from their facebook page.

I went to the shop that handled the warranty today and they said that there was nothing more they could do since &^&^ylized already made their determination.   Once I get the wheel back I will take it to Mark.

After applying more pressure to their Facebook Page; Specialized came back with a revised offer that was very reasonable.  I've settled the claim.

To points made on the prior page... In many instances successful warranty claims are made via the bike shops that have good relationships with the distributors / want to make their customers happy.

Two real examples

#1 - I destroyed a Trek frame doing something it was 100% not built for and my LBS secured me a replacement no problem.  I did not buy the bike there

End result - That shop got my business and I still recommend them whenever I get the chance.

Important note - I caused the issue to the frame and that was fully disclosed in the discussion with the LBS.  No way should warranty have covered it.

#2 - A close friend had a Kona frame break at a weld point during local Charlotte riding - none of it at the level Kona advertised the bike being capable of.  Friend takes it to an LBS Kona dealer who promptly responds "I can't help you since you didn't buy the bike here"  Friend goes to a different authorized Kona dealer and secures a replacement frame.

End result  - The shop in question lost significant business due to their unwillingness to go to bat for their (potential) customers, and years later their missteps are still used in scenarios like these.

Important note - Issue was not caused by the individual, and even if it was, it was well within the warranty period.

Seek out the reseller with the good relationship / care for their customers and the warranty process can be a less painful one.

Exactly what both of these guys said.  Couldn't have stated it better!   Except for the "go see Mark" part...  Wink

For the LB chinese carbon rims, the warranty is only one year and you are on your own with respect to making multiple email contacts to LB and coordinating that warranty claim. Additionally, one needs to consider the cost of the wheel rebuild with the replacement rim in addition to the cost of shipping.

It appears that at the end of the day, Specialized came through with an equitable resolution to your claim.

When your car has a warranty issue you can take it to any dealer for correction.  You are not limited to the dealership you purchased it at.

My cars have never had warranty issues they always break down as soon as the warranty ends.  Maybe that's because I have a POS GM car.

I did not have my receipt so i went to the place i bought it form since they had my payment records.  I figured it would be the least painful in case specialized wanted proof of purchase and original ownership records.

Actually I just wanted to address this comment without starting a whole "flame SpecialEd" thread.  They actually build, ride and stress test ALL of their bikes, parts, components and helmets prototypes and randomly pull production pieces to stress test as well.  They have all of the equipment to test to failure in Morgan Hill.

I know they've caught hell for some of their business practices but they do make an excellent product.

I think Andrew's problem was more one of the bike shop not doing enough to back up his warranty claim.  I've seen how he rides and transports that bike.  He shouldn't have had to go through this trouble, honestly.    Smiley

OK.  I'm done.  Carry on.

Bro.............I love your avatar, that doughnut knocking Tiles off his bike is classic.

Ha! I thought that guy looked familiar. Tell Mr. Tiles that wheelset he built for me last year is the bomb. Have never had to tighten a single spoke. Still straight as arrow!

The Specialized wheel saga continues.  My wheels have been "lost" in transit/box arrived empty at the Fed Ex Memphis hub. The empty box has been sitting there for a week and no one thought to call about it.

The wheels were located.   Somehow they had been freed from their packaging during shipping.   I'm interested to see what shape they are in.   Makes me worried with carbon wheels or any wheel for that matter
