Steve, how much new trail did you bust out between Kamikaze and Stairway along the river?  If I'm not mistaken, it appeared that I was the first to ride it yesterday.  I was thinking it felt like another half to 3/4 mile.  Will be nice when it's run in, but dayamn was that soft....

Everyone, don't hop the branches diverting everyone to the right and help run in that new section...

I'm not sure 3 or 4 tenths at best and I'll hope it's more. That is just part of the new addition. I have to build a 12 to 14 foot bridge and then will continue on up the river a ways before doubling back with a short climb(by RRT standards) and downhill back to the stairway. I decided to loop it where I did so I could go ahead an get a little traffic to help keep it clear. The climb and downhill will take quite a bit of handwork.

Congratulations you were the first to ride the whole piece as it is. Matter of fact I think you were the sole rider out Thursday. Everyone asks about helping out so here is your chance to pack in some fresh trail. Oh RobP there is a little rock drop for you just as it rejoins the older trail.

Glad to hear that there will be a gap between the climb out of the viaduct and stairway.  I need some recovery time.

I was out there with Kenny, but he was on autopilot and jumped the branches across the trail and missed the new stuff.  Yeah, definitely needs srun it.  Thought I was gonna end up taking a swim when I slid out a little on the loose stuff right on the edge.  Wink

I think there was one other behind us yesterday also. Looks like he did 2 laps as well.

Yes, you definitely want to remember the golden rule of biking - "you will follow where you look" - in other words, don't look at the river, you're literally inches away from taking a swim.

I did a lap this morning, first one out today as proofed by the 100's of spider webs.
Can anyone tell me the actual total miles out there now?  I rode everything, both river sections and the new addition you are all talking about.  I thought it should be closer to 12 miles but Strava only gave me 10.6.

On a lighter note I had plenty of company out there today. Along with the 100 spiders, I saw one snake (black with white markings?), one chipmunk, either ten squirrels or one really fast one, two turtles, one wild turkey and one goat which may or may not have been wild (socially not naturally).

I saw Steve out there Saturday and meant to mention the new section as it stands is awesome.  Based on his comment here I am not excited about what he is going to do over that little bridge he is building.  I dont really want to climb up that elevation yet AGAIN.  Unless of course the descent is worth it.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

The Rock drop bringing the trail back together is a nice little tech move.  I will say that when I hit it on Saturday it was at a very slow speed since I went and looked at it first and the trail is still very new.  Anyway when I hit it at that slow of a speed my front tire still came pretty close to the bridge on landing, so once that burns in a bit hitting it with some speed may put you very close to the bridge which can be dicey.  Maybe if you get a chance to make that bridge wider?  It's not necessary, but just a thought.

The 8' length on that bridge was eaten up as I kept trying to get the right lineup. I may decide to use it above the "little bridge" and replace it with a 32" wide one 10' long. Will that be wide enough? I'd like it to be set up so dropping off that rock would be the faster line for those inclined to do so. The climb shouldn't have but about 40' of elevation. It will be a more technical methodical type climb I think. Followed by a back and forth slalom type descent which will take considerable benching and berms as needed. The section across the yet to be built bridge is very scenic view and also has mountain laurel growing on the hillside at least that's what I call it.

I hit it over the weekend as well and, although it may have took a bit of "bike English", I thought it was fine.  But again, a little wider of a bridge may leave a little more room for error.

If you have plans to make it wider, Id say go for it.  I actually think once the trail above the rock drop burns in a bit, the fastest line will be to use the leading edge of that rock and hit it like a little jump.  You probably won't even touch the backside of the rock.  There is nothing wrong with it being a little bit of a tech move where you have to hit the brakes a little. Having to think about it is part of the fun.

It's 12.3, 12.4 - Russ, I think your wheel sensor has been off a tad ever since you got the El Mar.

Thank you!  I thought Strava hosed me.

One follow up question, can you tell me what the current distance is of the second river trail section?

My odometer indicated 12.2 miles, and FWIW it was within a 10th compared to the mileage markers earlier in the trail (the last marker I remember was at about 8 miles). I was surprised to do the new section (loop part only, not the out and back) and still came out equaling my best time there. The rest of the trail must be fast enough now to offset the slower new section. The trail was great this evening, though the sky was getting a little ominous by the time I finished. What a unique trail.
