Sherman sand issue

Let me start off by saying that Sherman is still one of the Crown Jewel trails of our area. I rode out there today and it still rocks but there are some very sandy areas, especially in some turns. Is there a way to combat this?  As a new trailbuilder I am trying to learn. Sand is great for drainage but once it becomes your primary base I would think that it could become a problem.

Rain helps but then people get mad that the trail is closed.   Roll Eyes

It was pretty loose early this morning in spots.   I fell victim in one of the faster turns on the last section of the main loop. Just lost the front wheel.  I'm not complaining though. I thought Sherman was in great shape this morning but you could tell that a lot of rain fell in a short period of time.  The sand is really just all the loose stuff collecting in the low area when the rain washes it off the trail surface. It usually firms up in a day or two.

On a side note there was a really large tree down on the main loop right after the 9th time you cross the old fire (escape) road.  Definitely need a saw to get this one. I could help someone on Tuesday morning if no one gets it before then.  I have a saw if that helps.  Someone just let me know.

It was def super sandy this morning... its prob due to the downpours and will clear up somewhat like was said above.  It's like you can't win, too much rain, sand, too little rain, sand, uhg.  I had multiple close calls at washing out, only because I'm used to it being super grippy.

There are actually three big trees that could use a saw.  One from a little while ago on LL, which has formed a navigable go-around, the one mentioned above, which requires a dismount, and another that is partially intruding on to the trail but is still easy to navigate (can't remember if this is on LL or after - its def after the LL one I mentioned).

Must've had some big storms out there last week!  Still a great ride though, place was jammed!

The sand is from normal erosion. I can't see that its honestly an issue to have to deal with. I never have and have been building since 2000.

It gets super sandy at Francis Beatty too when it doesn't rain for awhile. Just the way it is. You learn to take it easy on the turns. Or you wind up on the ground.  Wink

Just load up the front end and push it through the turns... don't worry about sand... you won't be on it long enough for it to effect you unless you tense up and grab the binders..

Just push and roll through it... you'll make it every time

Sherman has been sandy for the past 4 or so years, it is a normal progression in erosion. When it rains, all of the finer particles of soils wash away, and you are left with sand.  This has been a topic of "discussion" for many years on this forum, and I have to agree with Robert C that if you leave the leaves a couple of years you will add back some of the loam that gets washed away.  There are other that will disagree with this, and that is fine. I will be the first to admit that I am not a scientist, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. And for Mark...

Greenways tend to be sand free, rock free and mostly root free  Wink Sand will be with us as it is the nature of our soil. I do agree I think the leaves should be left.

I was going to try and ride SB in the morning. But instead, if I get up early enough I'll drag my chain saw out and see what I can do. Chain is a bit dull from cleaning a family cemetery weekend before last. If anyone can pinpoint the locations for me to save some walking Smiley

I've put an X where I believe the two most serious ones are.  The third is somewhere past the second on the LL.  Not sure exactly where.
