This would help!  With the amount of traffic Sherman gets they will be crushed up into soil in no time.

Leaves are not loam.  Leaves are organic material, hold moisture and doesn't drain.  Don't know why y'all don't get that....

I can't even believe we're having this discussion...what do they do in Florida?!  They ride...

In case anyone needs clarification on what "loam" is... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I will gladly trade you 50 cubic yards of red clay for 5 cubic yards of sand on Tuesday.   No better flower beds than those that are a mix of sand, topsoil, vermiculite and mushroom compost.

Oh and some good old compost from broken down leaves.....

I could be misinterpreting, but from your article.

"A soil dominated by one or two of the three particle size groups can behave like loam if it has a strong granular structure, promoted by a high content of organic matter."

I didn't mean to offend anyone with my original post.  I am just trying to learn good trail building techniques.  Sherman is the barometer for me of how trails should be set up and maintained, and was just trying to learn from its TCs.  Sand is your best friend and your worst enemy all rolled in to one it sounds like.  Thanks for all of the information.

People seem to get near idealogical about leaf clearing for some reason. It doesn't take an interpretation of what “loam” is to realize that leaf cover can help hold sand and dirt in place during heavy rains. It certainly seems some of the washed out areas at sherman could use something to help hold the dirt down. And yeah, leaf removal is good for some areas too.

I just think leaving the leaves in place would help when it comes to erosion. Riding will eventually break the leaves down.

But which aspect of loam would that be?  If it's cohesion of particles, I would agree.  If it's drainage I would have to agree.  Even regardless of what Mr. Isitwinteryet thinks.

That's what the work on we did on Roller Coaster was for.  Should help the erosion on that section tremendously.  Smiley

Rode everything but the lake loop this evening and had zero issues sand or traction.  I was able to push it and ride very aggressively at speed.
The place is an ego booster for sure.

fun stuf
