I had this happen to me yesterday on the road bike going into a turn at 35+ mph. You can Google the science behind the cause, but your bike basically gets the perfect frequency to almost turn it into a tuning fork, and your front end goes into an uncontrollable wobble. Happens on motorcycles also. Flyinelvis had this happen to him not long ago, so I remembered the tip of laying my leg across the top tube to dampen the frequency. It worked perfectly and saved me from what could have been a bad crash. I almost shat a cat!

Posting here so folks know about it if it happens to you.

One gear really is enough..but my knees have forced me to go 1x10.

I had it happen to me decending Mitchel @ around 45 mph and on 181 last week. Mine was not bike related. It seems I get a little nervous and the adrenaline gets to me on REAL long and FAST decents. So I get a mild case of the shakes.  All I can do is bring it to a stop and take some deep breathes. Scarey Stuff.

happened to me at the Velodrome in the high bank as I was doing a flying 200, speed was around 40 and I called it a day once it got under control. Never took the rental out again, bought my own after that experience.

I always liked that bike. It had a nice ride and was comfortable. No frame wobble for me.

Definitely happens on motorcycles.  I had it happen on a CBR600 at about 85 mph.  Scary stuff.  Sold the bike not long after while I still had my skin.

Only descending on a road bike in the cold.  I get a shiver that makes its way to the front wheel.  For awhile I thought it was the bike

Longer, lower stem will help.

Fast motos have clip ons and steering dampers for a reason.

Saw a fellow on a nitro powered drag bike go into a wobble at about the 1000 foot mark and rode out all the way through the taps. He went across the strip and into the grass and back onto the asphalt in the shut down area. How he stayed upright I will never know. It took a long, long time for him to come down the return road. Figure he was trying to remove the leathers from his nether regions.

Just read alot about this. I'm guessing this only occurs on extremely long descents? Not necessarily shorter downhills like around here? I get the weight shift and knee on the frame to dampen and change the oscillation point but loosening the grip? Looks like to me the less grip on the bars would just invite a more violent shake. I have never experienced this but seems like something that would freak me out.
