Waterproofing my feet

I just got to try out some Louis Garneau shoe covers I bought last week, and every bad review I read online about them was true.  My feet were soaked.

The intended use is commuting on the road bike, about one hour each direction.  And I do mean waterproof, as in riding in the pouring rain and not having soaking wet shoes when I get home or get to work.

Should I invest in some good shoe covers, or go all out with waterproof shoes? If I go the shoe route I'd likely get something that'd double as a good winter shoe since I was considering a new pair for this winter anyways.

If it is summer time and you think/know your gonna get wet, why not wear sandles. Dickey used to wear them all the time as a messenger. His even had SPD cleat mounts on them. It's got to be better than having shoes full of water.

I actually hadn't considered that, and while I like the idea I'd like something I'd be able to use all year long (and use the summer as a test run before I commit to something in the winter).

Most winter shoes are waterproof, but not usable if its warm.

As stated, for summer get sandals.

Shoes are not that expensive, treat yourself.

I have 4 different pairs of shoes in rotation now, do not regret owning any of them.

sager - I thought an Accord beeped at me the other day, I was hoping it wasn't you!

I'm considering sandals since I can still likely get a few months out of them this year.  Shimano ones seem to be around $100 or so, Nashbar has them under $50.  Anyone know any shops that stock them?  I've been to Performance and REI this week running other errands but I didn't see any in their shoe sections.

I'll probably start considering new winter shoes come October or November.  Toe covers and my summer shoes worked great with heavy wool socks most of the winter, but they don't cut it when it's wet.

I recommend contacting teamdickey. I doubt anyones else has any more expirience with wet riding than him since he does it for a living.

Sandals in the summer.  Always if you can.

Other than that, wool socks and prepare to have wet feet eventually.  Fenders go a long way.  Waterproof shoes work to some degree, but if you don't have gore pants that go all the way down to your shoes.. ?

I'm going to look into some sandals this week.  Found Shimano ones for $90 on Amazon but I'd prefer to buy local if I can (plus I can try them on!).  The wet feet themselves don't bother me this time of year, it's the process of trying to dry shoes to use day after day that sucks, and simply buying another pair of shoes to rotate wouldn't help it much and I'd need a ton of newspaper.

For the winter I'm probably going to get some shoes or boots that fit me better (I have Sidi Diablo GTX but they're huge on me to fit layers of wool socks when I lived in MA), and eventually waterproof tights and jacket as well.  I have tons of cold gear but not wet weather cold gear.

I highly recommend Keen SPD sandals.  I'm not a fan of my Lake sandals.

Had my first commute with Shimano sandals this morning and I must say I'm pleased.  Particularly this afternoon, when I took off my shoes and socks and felt freedom before I hopped on the bike!  They're not as comfortable as my mountain bike shoes, but I wouldn't say they're uncomfortable either.

Looks like I won't be able to test them in the rain until next week, but I don't see much material to absorb water so I should be all set until probably September or October where I'll begin seriously considering some waterproof winter shoes anyways.

Specialized makes some great winter riding boots that are warm and waterproof.  Have had a pair for 3 years and like not having cold, numb toes after 30 minutes!  Shocked

I'll admit they are a bit pricey but what are warm, dry feet worth!  Wink

Those Defrosters are on my short list for this winter, I really like the idea of the flap over the "laces" area to keep water out.

Had my first rain ride in the sandals today, I'm very impressed!  Money well spent for sure.
