Southwest District Park?

Has anyone been out there in the last few weeks? I've been curious about it but the reviews or lack there of have kept me at bay. I'm wondering what the trail is like, I'm not that concerned about the community.

I haven't been there is a few months because (a) it's located in a bad neighborhood and (b) basic green trail. The two times i went i was the only car in the parking lot and after every lap I rode back to my car to make sure it was in one piece.

I'm new to some of the lingo around here, can you elaborate on what you mean by "basic green trail"?

Basically 3 types of trails: green, blue, black

Green - easy
Blue - intermediate
Black - advance

A good write up with a breakdown at the bottom:

Not sure what type of trail you are looking to ride, but if you are looking at a basic (green) trail, I would recommend:

North Mecklenburg Park
Col. Francis Beatty Park *
Jetton Park

* Beatty also has intermediate (blue) and advance (black) sections as well. One of my favorite trails to ride because of the diversity.

oh, ok yeah duh I knew that... I mean what the trail colors were... green circle, blue square, black diamond. But the way I read that first post was like... I'm thinking what is it all grass? It just didn't click.

I just want to know if anyone has ridden it recently, if so, is it comparable to Beaty or Anne Springs? (well worn dirt path, and how heavy on the rocks and roots?) Or is it more like PRP, which is in need of TLC...?

I can't comment on recently (within the last 2 weeks), but last time I was there the trail path was clearly defined.

I don't think it can be compared to Beatty or Anne Springs. I think it is closer to Jetton Park (or something similiar) as there are little to no roots, rocks, or obstacles.

Sherman Branch, North Meck Park, Reneissance Park are somewhat comparable to Anne Springs or Beatty. All have plenty of roots with a few climbs. Sherman Branch and Reneissance Park's trails are intermediate level, while North Meck Park's trail is easy level.

Last year maybe? Somebody posted about riding there. They suggested parking in the CPCC lot and cutting through the woods a few yards. The CPCC has security and cameras. I'd check with them first though.
The neighborhood where the SW park is sketchy at best.

The club built this trail at the request of the local community and Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Department in 2009. We used a $5,000 REI grant, a $5,000 NC Adopt-A-Trail grant and up to $7,500 (I think) of the clubs own funds to hire Trail Dynamics ("Water bOb" Kariker did the work) to machine build the trail. Our own Brian Malec was the Master Trail Builder, doing the trail design, layout (with tweaks from Water bOb), project coordination, contractor supervision, volunteer coordination and signage. He also built a 30 foot bridge.

This is a real pretty trail in a rather suprisingly beautiful piece of woods. Very good terrain for the most part. The trail is only 3 miles out and back - it's a lollipop loop. Do a couple of laps on the loop part - and then reverse direction. Its a very fun ride. The trail is VERY well built, mostly smooth tread (due to machine build) with a few small rocky patches.

I haven't been in a few years - since they razed the old housing project and recently built the new housing. The trail starts at the new-ish Community Center - corner of the parking lot at the kiosk. Very easy to follow. We only had one incident (theft of some gloves in the parking lot) when we were building the trail. I'd say Renni is much worse for theft - as always, don't leave valuables in the car, certainly not in sight. I've always felt safe going there by myself, but I'd prolly suggest that a woman not ride alone. Unsure if the trail is presently clear of trees/ branches - it prolly hasn't gotten the love it deserves.

I've always felt that this trail is prime for some technical features and lines. It also has a great spot for a skills area and plenty of dead cedar trees for building. A lot of potential for anyone who has an interest in building.

I just went out there today, most of my feedback I already left in a review. There were two downed trees and nightmarish spiderwebs all over. (wow that bridge was 30ft? Looks like 15)... It was gorgeous but very very neglected in my opinion. I would love to see it get some more regular use and TLC! I'd be interested in doing trail work with the experts but I would only be available in the mornings and not on Sundays.

It looked pretty clean to me, I think someone said there was security or cameras at the rec center, that's nice. It may not be some place I would go alone at night.
To be honest I could feel the depression in the area and I couldn't stop thinking about how positively impactful a good church outreach could make there. I just kept imagining the types of people living in those apartments - which looked clean not run down - but I just felt like there must be a lot of hardship in this community and someone mentioned there had been a murder or a dead body left in this area... These things leave tangible impacts on the people and the land.

(Sorry, realized today I had inadvertently started a duplicate thread after reading Amber's trail review)

I rode out there today. There is absolutely no reason not to ride this trail. Let me repeat that - There is absolutely no reason not to ride this trail.

The trail is about a 1/2 mile off of Billy Graham parkway and right next to a CPCC campus.

What's so scary about it? The nice new rec center? The old Little Rock Apartments complex (not "projects") or the new housing they just built? The scariest thing I saw out there was a huge deer (this one was alive and running). I suspect that the majority of the negative PR that this place gets has more to do with the color of the community, rather than the color of the trail signage.

There have been car break-ins at Renni, and North Meck (in the Huntersville "hood") recently. Does that make these trails no fly zones? As to the apocryphal "body" story, let's just assume it's true. But just because a body is found somewhere, doesn't mean he or she was killed there. It means somebody knew where to find some woods. I used to stop by a nice bar on 51 in Mint Hill with friends after work and guess what? One night somebody was shot there (and died there, so I guess when the police came his "body" was "found" there).

As tempting as it would be for me to bad mouth this trail in order to keep it to myself, I have to say it would be a waste for people to give up on it. Some of the nicest woods in the area and whoever designed this trail did an awesome job. It has the flow of North Meck and the potential to double in size and incorporate some blue / black lines. The terrain is great as is the soil (not so much clay, it's a sand and rock mixture).

Who is the trail coordinator?

My shovel is yours and I will tune up my chainsaw.

Also, let's go out there and start riding - how about a group ride on Monday night? 6:30?

What a great trail! Just needs more mileage and features. For those that dont already know, its like a mini Sherman Branch. Super duper fast and flowey! i may begin riding here after work for a quick ride (5 laps or so at 2.2mi per) on my route home. Its not very technical so if your looking for some quad burn, this may be the ticket.

Also, i didnt see anything in the way of sketch. Im not at all worried about this 'hood

And Eric, thanks bud..

I also work close to here, and would be down for a small group ride if you guys want to head back out one day next week. I saw the post a bit too late to make it yesterday, but I did hit up Renaissance for the first time. Speaking of sketch, someone's car was broken into at Renaissance while I was there. Southwest may actually be the safer choice around the Billy Graham Parkway area!

yeah, ive actually witnissed a car get broken into at renni. It wasnt done by anyone on foot. They were driving a car so it may have nothing to do with "the neighborhood"

as far as group riding..mondays would work best for me
