Slight hub wobble (but not loose side to side)

Fulcrum Racing 5 wheels on my road bike, approximately 5600 miles or so on them.  Issue is with the rear hub.

I don't notice any wobble when riding, and the hub (and axle when I took it off the bike) does not move side to side.  However if the wheel is mounted to the bike and I grab the rim, I can feel slight movement from side to side (which I first noticed standing at a red light this afternoon).  I took the whole hub apart tonight, took out the axle, removed the freehub, and nothing looks abnormal.  It all felt snug and normal when I put it back together.

I will say the bearings don't spin nearly as smoothly as they used to, and I did have to change one of the front hub's bearings about 1000 miles ago.  I read on some forums that these hubs have poor seals, and the amount I've been riding in rain lately (commuting) leads me to believe it's the bearings.

The nature of the wobble (and not side to side movement) is something I haven't encountered before, though.  Am I correct in suspecting bearings, or should I try something else?

THe bearing fit to the hub bore should be press fit tight. I have seen some loose bores in hub shells. It they fit good and snug, I would be inclined to believe the gritty bearings have opened up a little. It doesn't take much to get some movement.  A new set of bearings can be as cheap as $5.00 a piece. I would start there.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Snagged some Enduro 6001 bearings on my lunch break and installed them a few minutes ago.  Not a single bit of wobble in the stand and spinning smoothly, despite the fact that the methods I used to remove and install bearings would make any respectable mechanic cringe and/or cry.

I think something must have happened on my commute yesterday to make it really bad; the rear derailleur has been shifting poorly for the last 3-4 weeks despite my minor adjustments to compensate, but shifting today was downright atrocious.  I'm hoping it's all good in the morning once I get some miles on them!
