So, which is the better choice for the "occasional trip" to Pisgah / Wilson's creek?  The RIP seems like it might be a bit of overkill for the Piedmont, and it's significantly more jack than the Jet.

JET-9

4 inch travel 29ers are the butter zone for this area.

Could go with a TALAS or travel adjust REBA for the front to slacken the headtube.

Bigger is better, get the RIP9 or if you want to be really cool, the WFO. You want to have fun at Wilson Creek then you want more than 4inches of travel.

I have enjoyed my rides on a Jet 9 way more than on a Rip or WFO.

Your 6'5" right (have the Turner for sale i think) so unless you are a a bean pole (no judgement ment by that) it might push you towards the RIP 9.

But I think the question what what do you live for? Is a it a few hot laps on your local trails a couple times a week or are thouse just what get you by untill you can ride the bigger sutff?

Totally agree, if you're all about the local stuff than I could see the Jet9 being the right call. Personally I'm happy to pedal a heavier bike around local trails and then have a really good time in the mountains on it. I've also found that more travel gives me the confidence to hit bigger features and ride into gnarly sections faster, letting me improve my riding skills more.
